IE-9320-22S2C4X-A Description
The IE-9320-22S2C4X-A is the timing-and-backhaul flagship of the Cisco Catalyst IE9300 Rugged Series: a stackable, conformal-coated 1RU fanless switch that pairs 22 Gigabit SFP downlinks and 2 dual-media combo ports with 4 SFP+ uplinks running at 1G or 10G, under the perpetual Network Advantage license. It is the only IE9300 hardware with a GNSS/GPS external time source input and IRIG-B input/output interfaces, and the only one type-tested against salt mist and mixed-gas corrosion - built for substations and coastal or chemical sites that act as the network's clock. At 95.23 Mpps and 128 Gbps of switching bandwidth, it aggregates fiber rings into 10G backhaul while HSR, PRP, and PTP over PRP keep protection traffic lossless; the Advantage tier adds TrustSec over PRP, BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite, BGP-EVPN over VXLAN, MACsec-256, L3 NAT, multicast routing, and SD-Access Fabric Edge duty above the OSPF-capable Essentials baseline.

Key Features
A GNSS/GPS receiver input plus IRIG-B input and output in eight formats (B002/003/006/007/122/123/126/127) let this model take time from satellites, feed legacy IRIG-B devices, and anchor PTP distribution – capabilities no other IE9300 PID carries.
Four SFP+ uplinks at 1G or 10G collapse multiple Gigabit fiber rings into high-capacity backhaul, with 95.23 Mpps of forwarding keeping the aggregation layer out of the bottleneck conversation.
Conformal coating with salt-mist (IEC 60068-2-52) and mixed-gas (2-60) type-testing makes this the IE9300 for coastal substations, chemical plants, and wastewater facilities where board corrosion retires ordinary electronics early.
HSR, PRP, and PTP over PRP run on this model, and the -A license adds TrustSec over PRP, so duplicated protection-relay traffic carries group-based segmentation without sacrificing zero-loss failover.
BGP-EVPN over VXLAN, VRF-lite, SD-Access Fabric Edge and Policy Extended Node roles, MACsec-256, and the multicast suite ship perpetually, tying utility sites into modern fabric architectures.
StackWise joins up to four chassis with MRP over Stacking, while two field-replaceable, electrically isolated power modules cover A/B feeds – both layers of redundancy inside 1RU per unit.
Application Scenarios
Deployed where the station takes its clock: GNSS antenna feed in, IRIG-B out to legacy relays, PTP Power Profile and IEC 61850-9-3 timing onto the LAN, with PRP duplication protecting the process bus.
Aggregating fiber in atmospheres that corrode standard boards – offshore-adjacent utilities, pulp and paper, water treatment – where the coated, corrosion-tested chassis is the qualifying difference.
Terminating several REP or MRP Gigabit rings from field cabinets and lifting them onto 10G backbones for utilities, transit corridors, and large process sites that outgrew GE uplinks.

- The IE-9320-22S2C4X-A and IE-9320-22S2C4X-E are one coated, GNSS-equipped hardware split by license: Essentials already operates the timing interfaces, HSR/PRP, and OSPF, so the -A order specifically buys TrustSec (including over PRP), BGP/EIGRP, VRF-lite, MACsec-256, L3 NAT, multicast routing, and fabric roles up front.
- IE-9320-26S2C-A shares the license tier and downlink layout but stays at GE uplinks without GNSS/IRIG-B or coating, drawing 9W less and posting a substantially higher MTBF – the sensible pick for bay-level aggregation that neither sources time nor needs 10G.
- For deciding which SKU to order, ask what the node contributes: a timing source or corrosive-site role with day-one segmentation is exactly this PID, the same role under plain L2/OSPF duty starts on IE-9320-22S2C4X-E, and ordinary fiber aggregation without 10G or timing hardware belongs to IE-9320-26S2C-A.
Selection Guide
1. When The Switch Is The Clock
Specify this model wherever GNSS-derived time or IRIG-B distribution appears in the design – it is the only IE9300 with those interfaces, and PTP Power Profile plus IEC 61850-9-3 carry that time onto the Ethernet side.
2. Uplink Mathematics Before License
Sum the ring and backhaul load: several saturated GE rings or a 10G core handoff justify the SFP+ uplinks and 95.23 Mpps here; a node forwarding well under 28 Gbps serves cheaper on IE-9320-26S2C-A with the same Advantage features.
3. Atmosphere As A Selector
Salt air, H2S, chlorine, and heavy process dust argue for this coated, corrosion-tested variant even when bandwidth alone would not; board failure in year three costs more than the coating premium at order time.
4. Essentials Entry Stays Open
Projects that need the hardware exclusives but not day-one segmentation can order IE-9320-22S2C4X-E and hold the perpetual IE9300-NW-A= upgrade in reserve – the GNSS, IRIG-B, HSR/PRP, and stacking capabilities do not depend on the license tier.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Timing accessories |
Plan the GNSS antenna feed and IRIG-B cabling alongside the switch order. |
The interfaces are built in, but antenna and time-code wiring are site-supplied and drive commissioning. |
|
Power module pair |
Match PWR-RGD module class to the station battery or AC feed and order two for A/B redundancy. |
Module slots ship empty, and substation DC plants need the correct voltage family. |
|
Optic plan for SFP+ |
Select 10G optics (SR/LR/ER/ZR, -I/-X industrial grades) for the four uplinks and -RGD GE optics below. |
Uplink reach and temperature grade determine whether the 10G design survives the cabinet environment. |
|
Combo port media |
Keep GLC-TE/GLC-T/GLC-T-RGD copper SFPs off the order. |
Copper SFPs are unsupported on the dual-media ports and degrade the PTP accuracy this node exists to provide. |
|
Stack and rack hardware |
Add CAB-STK cables for additional members and the RM-RGD kit matching the rack standard. |
Stack redundancy and substation rack fit both depend on separately ordered parts. |
|
License bundle note |
Record that Network Advantage orders since 2025-08-23 include a 3-year Cyber Vision Advantage license (CV-A-IE). |
The bundled OT-visibility license changes the security tooling budget for the site. |
