C9300-48T-A Description
The C9300-48T-A is a Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series stackable access switch built for data-only campus deployments that also need Network Advantage entitlements from day one. It ships with 48 fixed 10/100/1000 Mbps copper ports and an open modular uplink slot that takes a field-swappable Cisco network module, such as the C9300-NM-8X for 8x 10G/1G SFP+ uplinks, rather than a fixed uplink block. The default PWR-C1-350WAC-P power supply carries no PoE output, since this is a data-only variant of the platform rather than a PoE+ or UPOE model. Network Advantage on this hardware unlocks advanced routing (BGP, EIGRP, unrestricted OSPF), segmentation (VRF, VXLAN, LISP, TrustSec), automation (NETCONF, RESTCONF, YANG), and MACsec-256, entitlements that the identical hardware running Network Essentials does not carry. Stacking uses StackWise-480 at 480 Gbps per stack across up to 8 members, with Cisco StackPower available for shared power redundancy across the stack.

Key Features
The open uplink slot ships without a network module installed, so the switch can be provisioned with a C9300-NM-8X for 8x 10G/1G SFP+ uplinks, or a 1G/40G/25G module, letting the aggregation layer’s uplink speed be chosen at deployment time instead of being fixed at manufacturing.
Network Advantage on this hardware adds BGP, EIGRP, and unrestricted OSPF routing scale, VRF/VXLAN/LISP/TrustSec segmentation, and NETCONF/RESTCONF/YANG automation on top of the Network Essentials feature set, which matters when the same closet also needs to run routed access or automated provisioning.
Up to 8 units stack over StackWise-480 at 480 Gbps, and Cisco StackPower lets stack members share power across the ring, which reduces the exposure of a single switch’s power supply failure inside a stack.
The default PWR-C1-350WAC-P supply carries no PoE budget, which keeps the base power draw of a data-only closet switch lower than a PoE-capable sibling at the same port count.
Network Advantage adds MACsec-256 encryption and Cisco TrustSec-based segmentation, which are the entitlements most often needed when a data-only access closet also has to carry policy-tagged traffic without a separate encryption appliance.
Three field-replaceable fan modules ship in an N+1 redundant configuration, so a technician can pull and replace a single failed fan module without powering down the chassis or removing this unit from an active StackWise-480 stack.
Application Scenarios
Deployed as the access-layer switch in campus rollouts that use NETCONF/RESTCONF/YANG automation or Cisco DNA Center-style provisioning to push configuration to many closets at once, a capability that requires the Network Advantage entitlement on this hardware.
Used in wiring closets that carry desktop and workstation traffic requiring VRF or VXLAN-based segmentation between departments or tenants, without needing PoE for endpoints in that closet.
Placed at the access layer in designs where the closet switch itself participates in dynamic routing with BGP, EIGRP, or unrestricted-scale OSPF rather than staying purely Layer 2, a role Network Essentials on this hardware cannot fill.

- The C9300-48T-A and C9300-48T-E run on identical hardware and share the same 256 Gbps switching bandwidth, 48 data-only ports, and 350W default power supply; the only difference is the Network Advantage license on the -A versus Network Essentials on the -E, which decides whether BGP/EIGRP routing, VRF/VXLAN segmentation, and MACsec-256 are available out of the box.
- Against the C9300-24T-A, the C9300-48T-A carries double the port count at the same license tier and the same modular-uplink and data-only power profile, so the choice between them is purely about how many access ports a closet needs, not about license or PoE capability.
- Against the C9300-48P-A, the C9300-48T-A trades the 437W PoE budget on the 715W default supply for a lower 350W power footprint with no PoE output at all; a closet with PoE+ access points or phones needs the C9300-48P-A instead, while a data-only closet gains no benefit from paying for the larger PoE-capable power supply.
- Ordering priority across this group should start with PoE requirement (C9300-48P-A if PoE+ endpoints exist, otherwise the C9300-48T-A or C9300-48T-E), then port count (24 vs 48), and only then license tier (Advantage vs Essentials) based on whether advanced routing, segmentation, or MACsec-256 are needed at deployment.
Selection Guide
1. When Network Advantage Is Required From Day One
This SKU is the right order when the closet’s design already calls for BGP, EIGRP, VRF/VXLAN segmentation, NETCONF/RESTCONF automation, or MACsec-256; ordering the Network Essentials variant instead would block those features until a new license order replaces the hardware’s built-in Network Stack license.
2. Downgrade Path To Network Essentials
If the deployment turns out to need only Layer 2 switching, routed access with a 1000-route OSPF cap, and basic telemetry, the C9300-48T-E delivers the same hardware at a lower license cost; moving to Essentials only makes sense before the order is placed, since the Network Stack license is not field-upgradable afterward.
3. Uplink Module Selection Before Order
Because the uplink slot ships empty, the target network module (for example C9300-NM-8X for 10G/1G SFP+, or a 25G/40G module) must be chosen and ordered separately; leaving it unordered means the switch has no uplink path until a module is purchased and installed.
4. Port Count Versus The 24-Port Sibling
If the closet needs fewer than 24 downlink ports of headroom, the C9300-24T-A at the same Network Advantage tier draws less power and costs less than this 48-port model; moving up to the C9300-48T-A only pays off once the port count actually approaches the 48-port ceiling.
5. PoE Requirement Boundary Against C9300-48P-A
If any connected endpoint in the closet needs Power over Ethernet, this data-only SKU cannot serve that port at all; the C9300-48P-A must be ordered instead, since the 350W default supply on the C9300-48T-A has no PoE circuitry to fall back on.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Network module selection |
Confirm which uplink module (C9300-NM-8X, C9300-NM-4G, C9300-NM-2Q, or C9300-NM-2Y) will be ordered for the empty uplink slot. |
The switch ships with no uplink module installed; without one there is no uplink path out of the closet. |
|
Second power supply slot |
Confirm whether a second PWR-C1 supply or the blank filler module will occupy slot 2. |
Running with an empty second slot and no filler is against Cisco’s documented airflow and acoustic guidance. |
|
Software subscription tier match |
Confirm the Cisco Catalyst or Cisco DNA subscription tier ordered matches Network Advantage. |
A mismatched subscription tier against the built-in Network Stack license can block feature activation. |
|
Smart Account assignment |
Confirm the target Smart Account and Virtual Account before the order is placed. |
Catalyst 9300 SKUs are Smart-licensed; a license entitlement tied to the wrong account can stall activation. |
|
StackWise cable length |
Confirm the 0.5 m default StackWise cable is sufficient, or order the 1 m or 3 m option. |
Rack spacing beyond the default cable length can prevent physically completing the stack. |
|
Minimum software baseline |
Confirm the target IOS XE release is 16.5.1a or later before deployment. |
Running below the documented baseline is unsupported for this hardware and license combination. |
