Nexus 9000 Series Switches are used for modern data center fabrics, cloud networks, AI clusters, spine-leaf designs, ACI fabrics, NX-OS VXLAN EVPN, border leaf, storage connectivity, and high-speed 100G, 400G, or 800G architectures.
Choose by fabric role, fixed or modular form factor, NX-OS or ACI mode, port speed, buffer needs, optics, breakout design, telemetry, MACsec, power, airflow, automation model, and future bandwidth growth.
Nexus 9300 models are fixed switches, Nexus 9400 and 9500 are modular data center platforms, and Nexus 9800 expands the portfolio for distributed modular high-speed fabrics. Selection depends on scale, slot design, and speed roadmap.
Use NX-OS mode for traditional or programmable data center fabrics, including VXLAN EVPN. Use ACI when the organization wants policy-based fabric automation through Cisco APIC. Hardware, software, operations, and team skill drive the choice.
Yes, selected Nexus 9000 platforms support 400G and 800G designs. Buyers should verify the exact switch family, port form factor, optics, breakout options, software release, power, cooling, and cabling plan.
Use Nexus 9000 for AI or GPU networks when the design needs high-throughput fabric links, predictable latency, telemetry, congestion visibility, power efficiency, and scalable spine-leaf architecture. Validate NIC speeds, optics, and oversubscription.
Often yes, but migration requires design validation. Check FEX dependencies, FCoE, vPC, VXLAN, optics, cabling, airflow, port speeds, software behavior, and whether the new Nexus 9000 architecture changes operations.
Nexus 9000 deployments can involve SFP, SFP28, QSFP, QSFP28, QSFP-DD, QSFP-DD800, OSFP, DAC, and AOC options. Verify compatibility matrix support by switch, line card, software release, speed, reach, and breakout mode.
Sizing mistakes often come from underestimating uplink speed, ignoring buffer requirements, choosing the wrong fixed or modular platform, missing ACI or NX-OS feature needs, overlooking optics cost, or planning insufficient power and cooling.
Verify exact model, fabric role, NX-OS or ACI mode, port speeds, optics, breakout plan, power, airflow, software release, license requirements, telemetry needs, MACsec, lifecycle status, warranty, support, and lead time before purchasing.
The Cisco Nexus 9000 Series is a family of data center Ethernet switches built for spine-leaf fabrics, top-of-rack server access, and modular core/aggregation. The series includes fixed Nexus 9300 switches (1G–800G ports) and modular Nexus 9500 chassis (1G–400G), alongside the higher-capacity Nexus 9200, 9400, and 9800 platforms. All of them share a single NX-OS software image and support unified ports for 10/25G Ethernet and 8/16/32G Fibre Channel, plus RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE).
The first decision is fixed versus modular. Fixed Nexus 9300 switches are self-contained 1RU/2RU units used as leaf, top-of-rack, or compact spine — the 93180YC-FX, for example, is a 1RU leaf with 48 × 1/10/25G SFP28 downlinks and 6 × 40/100G QSFP28 uplinks. Modular Nexus 9500 chassis scale by adding line cards: the Nexus 9504 takes up to 4 line cards and the Nexus 9508 up to 8, each supporting up to 2 supervisors and 6 fabric modules. A 9500 chassis is not a complete switch on its own — it needs supervisors, fabric modules, line cards, power supplies, and fan trays to function.
| Platform | Form factor | Typical role | Port speeds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nexus 9200 | Fixed 1–2RU | High-density spine/leaf | up to 800G |
| Nexus 9300 | Fixed 1–2RU | Leaf, top-of-rack, compact spine | 1G–800G |
| Nexus 9400 | Compact modular (4RU) | Mid-size aggregation | up to 400G |
| Nexus 9500 | Modular chassis (4/8/16-slot) | Core / aggregation spine | 1G–400G |
| Nexus 9800 | Modular | High-capacity AI/DC core | 400G-ready, 800G-capable |
Every Nexus 9000 switch operates in one of two modes, and the mode determines how you design and manage the fabric. In Cisco NX-OS mode, the switch runs as a standard standalone switch using Layer 2/3 plus VXLAN with a BGP-EVPN control plane, Segment Routing, and MPLS — managed per device or through automation. In Cisco ACI mode, the same hardware becomes part of a turnkey, policy-based fabric managed centrally by the APIC controller. The hardware is the same; you boot it into the mode your architecture requires, so confirm the intended mode and the matching NX-OS/ACI software release before you order.
These are the Nexus 9000 switches we most commonly supply, with verified port configurations. The Nexus 9336C-FX2 is a 1RU switch with 36 × 40/100G QSFP28 ports and 7.2 Tbps of bandwidth, with ports configurable at 1/10/25/40/50/100G. For 100G spine duty, the 1RU Nexus 9332C offers 32 × 40/100G QSFP28 (6.4 Tbps) and the 2RU Nexus 9364C scales to 64 × 40/100G QSFP28 (12.84 Tbps).
