The N9K-C9508-B3-E is a Cisco Nexus 9500 Series modular chassis bundle for large data center spine and aggregation switching. The 13RU Nexus 9508 chassis has eight line-card slots and comes with four N9K-C9508-FM-E fabric modules at 800 Gbps per slot, one supervisor, three power supplies, two system controllers and three fan trays. The FM-E modules support Cisco ACI and NX-OS, but N9K-X9732C-FX and N9K-X9788TC-FX line cards run NX-OS only on them.

Key Features
The 150 lb chassis occupies 13RU and holds up to eight line cards. There is no midplane, so line cards connect directly to the fabric modules.
Each N9K-C9508-FM-E provides 800 Gbps to every line-card slot and 6,400 Gbps in total. Four modules go in slots FM2, FM3, FM4 and FM6, and the fabric modules in a chassis must all be the same type.
N9K-X9732C-EX, N9K-X9732C-FX and N9K-X9788TC-FX reach full bandwidth on four FM-E modules. A fifth module adds fabric redundancy for N9K-X9732C-FX cards, the only one of the three that supports it.
The FM-E modules support both Cisco ACI and NX-OS. With them, N9K-X9732C-EX serves as an ACI spine, N9K-X9732C-FX and N9K-X9788TC-FX run NX-OS only, and ACI-mode and NX-OS-mode line cards cannot share a chassis.
Three 3000W supplies come installed in eight power positions, for 9,000W combined or 6,000W in n+1 mode. Filling all eight positions gives 24,000W combined, 21,000W in n+1 mode and 12,000W in n+n mode.
One supervisor and two N9K-SC-A system controllers run the chassis. The three fan trays move air port-side intake, and the chassis keeps running on two trays while one is replaced.
Application Scenarios
In a large Cisco ACI fabric, the eight-slot chassis acts as a spine, and N9K-X9732C-EX line cards give it up to 256 100G ports facing leaf switches.
A data center running NX-OS can bring many leaf pairs into one chassis, using N9K-X9732C-FX line cards that add MACsec to the 100G uplinks.
A hall that still has 10GBASE-T servers can mix N9K-X9788TC-FX line cards for copper access with 100G cards for uplinks within the same eight slots.

N9K-C9508-B3-E and N9K-C9508-B3-S share the 8-slot, 13RU Nexus 9508 chassis; the difference is four N9K-C9508-FM-E modules (800 Gbps cloud-scale, ACI and NX-OS) against four N9K-C9508-FM-S modules (NX-OS only), so ACI spine designs need the E bundle. A design that needs more than 8 line-card slots moves to N9K-C9516-B3-E, which has 16 slots in a 21RU chassis with N9K-C9516-FM-E modules; with those, N9K-X9732C-EX runs NX-OS only, not as an ACI spine. Four slots are enough for N9K-C9504-B3-E. For 1.6 Tbps per slot, order N9K-C9508-FM-G with N9K-C9508-FAN2 fan trays instead.
Ordering Checklist
- Power supply type: Select N9K-PAC-3000W-B (AC), N9K-PUV-3000W-B (universal AC/DC, selected with N9K-SELECT-C95PUV) or N9K-PDC-3000W-B (-48V DC). Supplies added later must match the type already installed; AC and DC types are not mixed in one chassis.
- Power cords: Add CAB-AC-STRT-C19US for US NEMA 6-20, CAB-AC-2500W-EU for Europe, CAB-AC-2500W-INT for international sites, or NO-PWR-CORD for no cord. The 3 kW AC supplies need a region-specific C19 cord; NO-PWR-CORD ships the order without one.
- Power slot cover: Add N9K-C9500-P-CV= for each empty power supply slot (the bundle fills 3 of 8). Without it an open power slot is left uncovered.
- Fabric modules: Install four N9K-C9508-FM-E, and fit N9K-C9508-FM-CV in empty FM slots. Open fabric module slots need the matching blank.
- Line cards: Select N9K-X9732C-EX, N9K-X9732C-FX or N9K-X9788TC-FX with N9K-C9508-FM-E or N9K-C9508-FM-E2; full bandwidth takes four FM-E, and 4+1 fabric redundancy takes a fifth FM-E and an all-N9K-X9732C-FX chassis. The bundle ships without line cards, and the fabric module count decides whether the cards run at full bandwidth.
- Rack-mount kit: Add N9K-C9500-RMK=, the kit listed for the Nexus 9508 and 9516. The 9504 kit N9K-C9504-RMK= does not apply to this chassis.
