N9K-C93240YC-FX2 Description
The N9K-C93240YC-FX2 is the Cisco Nexus 93240YC-FX2 Switch, the 48-port member of the N9300-FX2 Series and a 1.2RU platform Cisco rates at 4.8 Tbps of bandwidth and over 2.5 bpps. Forty-eight downlink ports run at 1/10/25-Gbps while twelve uplink ports configure as 40 or 100-Gbps QSFP28, a ratio Cisco describes as ideal for a non-oversubscribed solution in a compact form factor, and FC-FEC and RS-FEC are enabled so 25 Gbps links carry over longer distances. What separates this model from most of its series is storage: it supports 16/32-Gbps Fibre Channel, which the N9300-FX2 specification table lists only for this switch and the N93360YC-FX2 while the N9336C-FX2 and N93216TC-FX2 show N/A. The platform deploys in standard Cisco Nexus environments in NX-OS mode or as infrastructure ready for the Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure platform in ACI mode. Inside sit a 4 core CPU, up to 24 GB of system memory, a 128 GB SSD and a 40 MB system buffer, with management through 2 ports comprising 1 RJ-45 and 1 SFP+. Up to two power supplies draw from 750W AC, 1100W AC, 1100W DC or 1100W HVAC/HVDC options at 298W typical and 708W maximum, cooling comes from 5 fans with port-side intake and exhaust airflow, and the chassis measures 2.1 x 17.3 x 23.3 in. (5.3 x 43.9 x 59.1 cm).

Key Features
Forty-eight downlinks at 25-Gbps against twelve uplinks at 100-Gbps is what Cisco calls a non-oversubscribed layout, so a rack of 25G servers hands off to the spine without the aggregate contention a thinner uplink count would introduce.
Support for 16/32-Gbps Fibre Channel puts SAN and LAN traffic on one leaf switch, a capability the N9336C-FX2 and N93216TC-FX2 do not carry, which removes a separate storage fabric switch from racks that would otherwise need both.
FC-FEC and RS-FEC are enabled specifically so 25 Gbps links run over longer distances, which matters where server rows sit far enough from the leaf that raw 25G reach would otherwise force a shorter cable plan or a different optic class.
Sixty total ports land in a 2.1 in. high chassis, so a top-of-rack position carries the full downlink count and the uplinks in barely more than a single rack unit of height.
The switch takes up to two power supplies chosen from 750W AC, 1100W AC, 1100W DC and 1100W HVAC/HVDC, which lets the same switch model drop into AC racks, DC-powered facilities and high-voltage installations without changing the switch PID.
The platform serves standard Nexus environments in NX-OS mode and Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure deployments in ACI mode, so a site can buy the hardware before it has settled which management model it will run, subject to each mode having its own minimum image.
Application Scenarios
Installed as a top-of-rack leaf where 48 servers connect at 25-Gbps and twelve 100-Gbps uplinks carry the aggregate to the spine layer.
Deployed where storage traffic at 16 or 32-Gbps Fibre Channel shares the same leaf switch as Ethernet server traffic instead of terminating on a separate fabric switch.
Racked as a leaf node in a Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure fabric running the ACI image, in the same physical position an NX-OS mode deployment would use.

- Downlink count is the axis that separates N9K-C93240YC-FX2 from N9K-C93360YC-FX2, and the cost of doubling to 96 ports is not only price: the larger switch grows to 3.38 in. of rack height, raises typical draw from 298W to 404W and drops rated MTBF from 345,950 to 318,030 hours while keeping the same twelve uplinks.
- N9K-C9336C-FX2 is not a denser or thinner version of the same thing but a different role, since it carries no 25-Gbps downlinks at all and instead presents 36 QSFP28 ports with breakout on every one; it also drops Fibre Channel entirely, so a converged storage design cannot substitute it.
- Software floors split along generation rather than size. N9K-C93240YC-FX2 and N9K-C9336C-FX2 both run from NXOS-703I7.3, while N9K-C93360YC-FX2 requires NXOS-9.3(1) and ACI-N9KDK9-14.1.2, which puts the 96-port model out of reach for an estate pinned to an older validated train.
- For deciding which SKU to order, count the 25-Gbps server ports the rack must terminate first, then confirm whether Fibre Channel is required since that alone eliminates N9K-C9336C-FX2, and treat rack height and power draw as the tie-breakers between the two Fibre Channel capable models.
Selection Guide
1. Ninety-Six Ports Cost More Than Twice The Rack Height
Stepping to N9K-C93360YC-FX2 for double the downlinks adds 1.28 in. of chassis height, 106W of typical draw and roughly 28,000 hours of rated MTBF loss while the uplink count stays at twelve; a rack terminating under 48 servers gains nothing but a longer software floor from that move.
2. Where Fibre Channel Removes A Second Switch
The 16/32-Gbps Fibre Channel support means a converged rack terminates SAN and Ethernet on one leaf, and N9K-C9336C-FX2 has no equivalent; a design that would otherwise add a dedicated fabric switch to the rack is buying that consolidation with this model.
3. Twelve Uplinks Set The Non-Oversubscribed Boundary
The 48 by 25-Gbps to 12 by 100-Gbps ratio is what makes the layout non-oversubscribed, so a plan that populates fewer than twelve uplinks trades that property away; sizing the uplink count down is a contention decision rather than a cabling economy.
4. Twenty-Five Gigabit Distance Rests On FEC
FC-FEC and RS-FEC are enabled on this switch specifically to carry 25 Gbps over longer distances, which means a row-to-row 25G cable plan that would fail on a switch without that capability is inside scope here; a rack whose links are all short does not draw on that advantage.
5. The Older Image Floor Widens The Installed Base
At NXOS-703I7.3 and ACI-N9KDK9-14.0 this switch sits below the NXOS-9.3(1) and ACI-N9KDK9-14.1.2 floors of N9K-C93360YC-FX2, so an estate holding an older validated train can add this model today and defer the 96-port option until the software qualification catches up.

Why It Matters 11348_200deb-6d> |
|---|---|---|
|
Operating mode 11348_c0deda-81> |
Confirm whether the switch will run NX-OS mode or ACI mode. 11348_c3f813-61> |
Each mode carries its own minimum image, NXOS-703I7.3 or ACI-N9KDK9-14.0, and the image has to be staged accordingly. 11348_1b83ff-e7> |
|
Fibre Channel requirement 11348_2a38cc-e3> |
Confirm whether the rack needs 16 or 32-Gbps Fibre Channel on this switch. 11348_bec803-33> |
Fibre Channel support is model-specific in this series, so a substitution to a non-FC model breaks a converged design. 11348_e6a399-da> |
|
Power supply type and count 11348_3f79dd-bd> |
Confirm which of 750W AC, 1100W AC, 1100W DC or 1100W HVAC/HVDC units are required and how many of the two bays are populated. 11348_96947e-3a> |
The switch accepts up to two supplies and the input type has to match the facility feed. 11348_e78bc6-29> |
|
Power budget basis 11348_366710-63> |
Confirm facility planning uses the 298W typical and 708W maximum input figures rather than the power supply rating. 11348_31dbde-91> |
Cisco states the typical and maximum values are drawn from the power circuit while the supply rating describes output to the inside of the switch. 11348_a92eac-97> |
|
Airflow direction 11348_7a8813-ec> |
Confirm the rack cooling plan matches port-side intake and exhaust airflow. 11348_b54ea5-1a> |
A rack laid out for the opposite airflow direction will recirculate hot air across the switch. 11348_5d2cf3-f2> |
|
Rack height allowance 11348_7aa90f-44> |
Confirm 2.1 in. of vertical space is free at the target position. 11348_193c41-f2> |
The chassis is taller than a single rack unit, so a slot sized at exactly 1RU will not accept it. 11348_67364d-b0> |
|
Optic and FEC plan 11348_a534fe-5b> |
Confirm the 25 Gbps links are cabled within the reach the enabled FC-FEC and RS-FEC support. 11348_5d6264-e7> |
Error correction extends distance but the optic and fiber choice still has to match the run. 11348_aed62f-34> |
