GLC-TE Description

Cisco GLC-TE is a 1000BASE-T copper Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver designed to provide flexible Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over standard Category 5 unshielded twisted-pair cabling. This hot-swappable RJ-45 SFP supports link lengths up to 100 meters and features full 10/100/1000 auto-negotiation as well as Auto-MDI/MDIX for simple and seamless deployment in any copper networking environment. As an Extended Temperature (EXT) version, GLC-TE is rated for -5°C to 85°C, making it suitable for enterprise wiring closets, campus networks, and even harsh edge or industrial locations where environmental resilience is required. Unlike fiber-based optics, the copper SFP provides a cost-effective option for short-range uplinks, lab environments, or mixed copper-and-fiber infrastructures.

Questions & Answers

  • What is Cisco GLC-TE?

A 1000BASE-T copper SFP that provides 1 Gbps connectivity over Cat5e/Cat6 twisted-pair cabling up to 100 meters, enabling flexible copper uplinks or server connections.
  • When to choose GLC-TE vs fiber SFPs?

Use GLC-TE for short copper runs and easy patching. Choose fiber (SX/LH) for longer distances, EMI immunity, or when traversing patch panels and risers.
  • Is auto-negotiation supported?

Yes. It supports auto-negotiation and auto-MDI/MDI-X with compatible switches and NICs, simplifying deployment.
  • Any cabling best practices?

Use high-quality Cat6/Cat6A for cleaner margins, avoid tight bends, and keep away from strong EMI sources. Certify cables for reliable 1G performance.
  • Can it be used in any SFP slot?

Check device compatibility lists. Most modern Cisco switches support GLC-TE, but always verify software and platform support.
  • PoE considerations?

GLC-TE is for data; it does not provide PoE. Power delivery requires PoE-capable switch ports on copper line cards.
  • Common scenarios?

Connecting copper-only servers, short-reach uplinks in wiring closets, and quick temporary links without fiber termination.
  • How to troubleshoot errors?

Check cabling length/quality, duplex settings, and EMI. Replace patch leads, reseat the SFP, and verify switch IOS versions.
