GLC-ZX-SMD Description
The GLC-ZX-SMD is a Cisco 1000BASE-ZX SFP transceiver for long single-mode fiber links between sites. The module transmits at 1550 nm over dual LC/PC connectors, reaches approximately 70 km depending on link loss, allows 21 dB of channel insertion loss and operates from -5 to 85°C with Digital Optical Monitoring. Spans with less than 8 dB of loss need a 10 dB inline optical attenuator in front of the receiver at each end.

Two remote sites joined by a single-mode dark-fiber pair of about 70 km, depending on link loss, can connect their Gigabit Ethernet switches directly with the module at 1550 nm.
At a metro aggregation site, a router’s SFP port can feed a Gigabit Ethernet circuit to a distant location, and Digital Optical Monitoring reports transmit and receive power across the span.

GLC-ZX-SMD is the 1550 nm model for spans of about 70 km depending on link loss, with 21 dB of allowed channel insertion loss over single-mode fiber, while GLC-EX-SMD transmits at 1310 nm and covers 40,000 m with 18 dB. Spans of 40 km or less over G.652 SMF fit GLC-EX-SMD. GLC-ZX-SM-RGD has the same 1550 nm reach, DOM and loss budget in the industrial -40 to 85 C range, so cabinets and enclosures that fall below -5 C need GLC-ZX-SM-RGD in place of GLC-ZX-SMD.
Ordering Checklist
- Inline attenuator: Add a 10-dB inline optical attenuator in front of each receiver when the single-mode span loss is under 8 dB; the datasheet ordering table does not include it. The ZX receiver is overloaded on short spans without it.
- Host support: Confirm the target switch or router model and its SFP port appear on the Transceiver Modules Compatibility list for GLC-ZX-SMD. A host can reject an optic that fits the cage but is not on its supported list.
