GLC-ZX-SMD Description

Cisco GLC-ZX-SMD is a 1000BASE-ZX Gigabit Ethernet SFP transceiver optimized for ultra long-distance single-mode fiber connections. Operating at 1550 nm, it supports distances of up to approximately 70 km, subject to fiber quality, splice count, and overall optical loss budget. This hot-swappable module features an LC duplex connector and includes Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) for real-time performance and diagnostics. With an extended operating temperature range (-5°C to 85°C), the GLC-ZX-SMD ensures reliable Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in service provider networks, enterprise backbones, and metropolitan area networks. For shorter links, inline optical attenuators are recommended to prevent receiver overload when optical loss is low. This makes the module highly versatile across varying deployment environments.

Questions & Answers

  • What is Cisco GLC-ZX-SMD used for?

A 1000BASE-ZX SFP supporting long-reach single-mode fiber, typically up to around 80 km with appropriate fiber and loss budgets. It’s ideal for long campus or metro links at 1 Gbps.
  • How does GLC-ZX-SMD compare to GLC-EX-SMD?

GLC-EX-SMD generally targets around 40 km distances, whereas GLC-ZX-SMD supports longer spans near 80 km under proper conditions and attenuators where required.
  • Does it require attenuation on short links?

Yes, ZX optics may be too powerful for very short runs. Use appropriate attenuators to avoid receiver overload and errors on short distances.
  • Which fiber type is recommended?

Single-mode fiber (SMF). Validate connector types and cleanliness; small contamination can significantly impact long-reach links.
  • Can it interoperate with third-party optics?

Interoperability varies. Use Cisco-approved optics on both ends for guaranteed support, or test thoroughly when mixing vendors.
  • Typical use cases?

Inter-building fiber, metro access rings, and long backhaul connections where 1 Gbps suffices.
  • Any power considerations?

Ensure the switch SFP slots supply adequate power and are compatible with ZX optics per device datasheet.
  • How to monitor link health?

Track optical power levels, errors, and alarms. Clean connectors routinely and keep spare optics on hand.
