DS-SFP-FC8G-SW Description
The DS-SFP-FC8G-SW is a Cisco MDS 9000 Series 2/4/8-Gbps Fibre Channel shortwave SFP+ transceiver for short SAN links inside a data center. The module autosenses 2, 4 and 8 Gbps and runs 850 nm optics over multimode fiber with dual LC connectors and operates from 0 to 70 degrees C. At 8G the reach is 21 m on OM1, 50 m on OM2, 150 m on OM3 and 190 m on OM4 or OM5, so the fiber grade sets the usable distance.

DS-SFP-FC8G-SW and DS-SFP-FC8G-LW share 2/4/8G autosensing, dual LC connectors and the same MDS support columns, and what separates them is the fiber: DS-SFP-FC8G-SW runs at 850 nm over multimode fiber, reaching 21 m on OM1, 50 m on OM2, 150 m on OM3 and 190 m on OM4 or OM5 at 8G, while DS-SFP-FC8G-LW runs at 1310 nm over 9.0-micron single-mode fiber for up to 10 km. Links that exceed the multimode figures, or that run over single-mode fiber, need DS-SFP-FC8G-LW. Spans up to 40 km move to DS-SFP-FC8G-ER, which uses 1550 nm single-mode optics. All three keep a 2 m minimum cable distance, so the fiber grade and span decide the model.

- MDS hosts: Confirm the host is an MDS 9000 product such as DS-X9448-768K9, DS-X9334-K9, MDS 9220i, MDS 9250i, MDS 9148S, MDS 9396S, MDS 9132T, MDS 9148T or MDS 9396T, or DS-X9648-1536K9 in the 9.x matrix. The matrix lists the optic only for these hosts.
- Fiber and connector: Use dual LC patch cords on 850 nm multimode fiber, with the OM grade matched to the 8G distances of 21 m (OM1), 50 m (OM2), 150 m (OM3) and 190 m (OM4/OM5). Single-mode paths do not suit an 850 nm shortwave optic.
