QSFP-40G-SR4 Description
The QSFP-40G-SR4 is a Cisco 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP transceiver for short 40G links over parallel multimode fiber in data centers. The module uses an MPO-12 connector with four 10G lanes at 850 nm, reaches 100 m on OM3 and 150 m on OM4 or OM5, and draws 1.5W from 0 to 70°C. The module also supports 4x10G breakout to four 10GBASE-SR interfaces through an external 12-fiber parallel-to-duplex cable.

Application Scenarios
In a data center with MPO-12 multimode cabling, the module joins a top-of-rack switch to an aggregation switch over native 40G links of up to 100 m on OM3 or 150 m on OM4 or OM5.
A QSFP 40G port on a leaf switch can serve four 10GBASE-SR server connections in the 4x10G mode, with an external parallel-to-duplex breakout cable splitting the 12-fiber trunk.

QSFP-40G-SR4 and QSFP-40G-CSR4 share the MPO-12 connector, 1.5W power and 4x10G breakout through a parallel-to-duplex cable, but SR4 reaches 100m on OM3 and 150m on OM4 or OM5 where CSR4 reaches 300m and 400m. Links longer than that need QSFP-40G-CSR4. Sites cabled with two-strand duplex LC fiber move to QSFP-40G-SR-BD, which matches the 100m and 150m reach but draws 3.5W and is not an SR4 breakout optic.
Ordering Checklist
- Fiber connector: Order 12-fiber MPO/MTP female trunk or patch cords, not duplex LC. The module has an MPO-12 interface, so an LC-terminated link cannot connect to it.
- Breakout cable: For 4x10G, order an external 12-fiber parallel-to-duplex breakout cable to four 10GBASE-SR ports separately. The module alone cannot connect to four 10G SFP+ ports.
