QSFP-40G-SR4-S Description
The QSFP-40G-SR4-S is a Cisco 40GBASE-SR4 S-Class QSFP transceiver for native 40G links over parallel multimode fiber in data centers. The module uses an MPO-12 connector with four 10G lanes at 840 to 860 nm, reaches 100 m on OM3 and 150 m on OM4 or OM5, and draws 1.5W from 0 to 70°C. The S-Class module does not support 4x10G breakout or FCoE.

Application Scenarios
Two data center switches cabled with 12-fiber MPO trunks can be joined by a single 40G link of up to 100 m on OM3 or 150 m on OM4 or OM5, with one module in each QSFP port.
A leaf switch whose QSFP 40G ports connect one-to-one to spine ports over multimode trunks, with no 10G servers fanned out from the port, runs the module as a plain 40GBASE-SR4 uplink.

QSFP-40G-SR4-S and QSFP-40G-SR4 share the MPO-12 connector, 1.5W power and the same 100m OM3 and 150m OM4 or OM5 reach, but the S-Class part does not support 4x10G breakout or FCoE. A design that breaks one 40G port out to four 10G links needs QSFP-40G-SR4 or QSFP-40G-CSR4. CSR4 also extends the MPO-12 path to 300m on OM3 and 400m on OM4 or OM5. Sites cabled with two-strand duplex LC fiber move to QSFP-40G-SR-BD, which matches the 100m and 150m reach but draws 3.5W and is not an SR4 breakout optic.
Ordering Checklist
- Host support: Confirm the target platform is a listed host for this optic, for example Nexus 3000 N3K-C3064PQ, Nexus 5500 N5K-C55XX, Nexus 6000 N6004-96Q, Nexus 7000 N7K-M206FQ-23L, Nexus 9000 N9K-X9636PQ or NCS 5500 NC55-36X100G. A host can reject an optic that fits the QSFP cage but is not on its compatibility list.
- Fiber connector: Order 12-fiber MPO/MTP female trunk or patch cords, not duplex LC. The module has an MPO-12 interface, so an LC-terminated link cannot connect to it.
