QSFP-40G-SR-BD Description
QSFP-40G-SR-BD is a Cisco 40GBASE-SR-BiDi QSFP optical transceiver for 40G Ethernet links over duplex LC multimode fiber, used to add short-reach 40G connectivity on Cisco QSFP 40G host ports without replacing installed duplex MMF cabling. The module uses a duplex LC connector, 832 to 918 nm transmit and receive wavelengths, two 20-Gbps optical channels, and supports 30 m on OM2, 100 m on OM3, and 150 m on OM4 or OM5 fiber, with 3.5W power consumption, a gray pull tab, and +10 to 70 degrees C operating temperature.

Application Scenarios
QSFP-40G-SR-BD fits short-reach data center links where the installed fiber plant already uses duplex LC multimode patching and the design goal is 40G Ethernet without replacing the run with MPO-12 parallel fiber.
Keep this Cisco BiDi module in spare inventory for supported QSFP 40G ports that are cabled with two-strand MMF. Receiving teams should keep it separate from SR4 and CSR4 optics because the connector and fiber-count requirements are not interchangeable.
The Cisco tables make connector loss part of the order check for BiDi links. OM3 and OM4 or OM5 designs should be reviewed against the documented reach and allowable connector-loss values before a maintenance window is scheduled.

Receive-only monitor module |
- In a QSFP-40G-SR-BD vs QSFP-40G-SR4 comparison, the main difference is cabling: QSFP-40G-SR-BD uses duplex LC MMF while QSFP-40G-SR4 uses MPO-12 parallel MMF.
- The QSFP-40G-SR-BD difference from QSFP-40G-CSR-S is reach and wavelength design, because CSR-S is the longer duplex LC 40GBASE-CSR option in the table.
- QSFP-40G-SR-BD vs QSFP-40G-BD-RX is a transceiver versus monitor comparison; BD-RX has the same LC BiDi media profile but is listed as a receive-only monitor module.
- For which model to choose, match the Cisco SKU to connector type, multimode fiber reach, transmit function, and host compatibility shown in Cisco documentation.
Selection Guide
1. Choose it for LC BiDi 40G links
Select QSFP-40G-SR-BD when the BOM requires Cisco 40G Ethernet over duplex LC multimode fiber and the link can stay within the documented OM2, OM3, OM4, or OM5 distance class.
2. Keep SR4 orders on MPO-12 cabling
Use QSFP-40G-SR4 instead when the physical design is based on 12-fiber MPO parallel MMF rather than duplex LC BiDi cabling.
3. Move to CSR-S only for longer duplex MMF requirements
Choose QSFP-40G-CSR-S only when the Cisco order requires the longer 300m OM3, 400m OM4, or 440m OM5 reach profile shown for CSR-S.
4. Validate host and optical path together
Confirm the Cisco platform, QSFP 40G port support, software compatibility, far-end optic, fiber grade, connector loss, and +10 to 70 degrees C operating range before approving the line item.
