QSFP-40G-SR-BD Description
The QSFP-40G-SR-BD is a Cisco 40GBASE-SR-BiDi QSFP transceiver for 40G links over existing duplex multimode fiber in data centers. The module uses a duplex LC connector with two 20G channels across 832 to 918 nm, reaches 100 m on OM3 and 150 m on OM4 or OM5, and draws 3.5W. The operating range is +10 to 70°C rather than the 0°C lower limit of most QSFP modules in this family, and the module is not an SR4 breakout optic.

Application Scenarios
A data center row cabled with duplex LC multimode patching for 10G can move its uplinks to 40G on QSFP ports without pulling MPO trunks, using the module’s two 20G BiDi channels over one fiber pair.
Between adjacent rows or rooms, the module links leaf and spine QSFP 40G ports over distances of up to 100 m on OM3 or 150 m on OM4 or OM5 multimode fiber.

QSFP-40G-SR-BD and QSFP-40G-SR4 reach the same 100m on OM3 and 150m on OM4 or OM5, but SR-BD runs over existing duplex LC multimode fiber where QSFP-40G-SR4 needs a 12-fiber MPO-12 trunk. SR-BD draws 3.5W against 1.5W and is not an SR4 breakout optic, so a 4x10G design needs QSFP-40G-SR4. Duplex LC links beyond 150m move to QSFP-40G-CSR-S, which reaches 300m on OM3, 400m on OM4 and 440m on OM5 at the same 3.5W. QSFP-40G-BD-RX has the same LC BiDi media profile but is a receive-only monitor module, so it cannot stand in for SR-BD on a live link.
Ordering Checklist
- Host support: Confirm the target platform is a listed host for this optic, for example Nexus 3000 N3K-C3064PQ, Nexus 6000 N6004-96Q, Nexus 7000 N7K-F312FQ-25, NCS 5500 NC55-36X100G, ASR 9000 A9K-MPA-1X40GE or Firepower FPR4K-NM-4X40G. A host can reject an optic that fits the QSFP cage but is not on its compatibility list.
- Fiber connector: Order duplex LC multimode patch cords, not MPO-12 cabling. This is a duplex LC module, and an MPO-12 trunk does not connect to it.
- Module PID: Order QSFP-40G-SR-BD, not the QSFP-40G-BD-RX monitor module. The two PIDs are listed separately, and BD-RX only receives.
- Operating temperature: Keep the site at +10 to 70 degrees C, instead of the 0 to 70 degrees C range of most QSFP modules in this family. A cold-aisle or unconditioned site below +10 degrees C is outside the rated range.
