QSFP-100G-SM-SR Description

The QSFP-100G-SM-SR is a Cisco 100GBASE CWDM4 Lite QSFP transceiver for 100G links of up to 2 km over duplex single-mode fiber inside data centers. The module uses four wavelengths (1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm) on duplex LC connectors, has a 4.2 dB optical link budget and draws up to 3.5W. The module is rated only for +10 to +60°C operation and interoperates with 100G CWDM4 modules at the far end.

Application Scenarios

Leaf-To-Spine Links In A Data Hall

In a temperature-controlled data hall, the module links 100G QSFP ports on leaf and spine switches over duplex LC single-mode fiber of up to 2 km.

Links Through Patch Panels

Where a link crosses one or more structured-cabling patch panels, the 4.2 dB link budget of the module covers the added connector loss on a duplex single-mode path.

QSFP-100G-SM-SR is the CWDM4 Lite version of QSFP-100G-CWDM4-S: the two use the same four wavelengths (1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm), reach 2 km on duplex LC single-mode fiber at 3.5W and interoperate, but QSFP-100G-SM-SR operates only from +10 to +60 degrees C and has a 4.2 dB link budget. Sites outside that range, or links with heavy patch-panel loss, order QSFP-100G-CWDM4-S, rated 0 to 70 degrees C. QSFP-100G-FR-S also reaches 2 km but on a single wavelength with PAM4 and FEC at 4.3W, so it belongs where the far end is an FR1 optic. Links up to 10 km move to QSFP-100G-LR-S, which draws 4.0W.

Ordering Checklist

  • Host support: Confirm the target switch or router, line card and QSFP28 port are on Cisco’s 100 Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver Modules Compatibility Matrix for this optic. A host can reject an optic that fits the cage but is not on its compatibility list.
  • Fiber and connector: Use G.652 single-mode fiber with duplex LC patch cords, PC or UPC polish. The optic has LC ports, and the connector rule for this family excludes APC jumpers.
  • Temperature range: Keep the install location within +10 to +60 degrees C. This is the one QSFP-100G part with a narrower range than the standard 0 to 70 degrees C.
  • Far-end optic: Put QSFP-100G-SM-SR or QSFP-100G-CWDM4-S on the other end. These two are documented as interoperable; other 100G optics use a different optical profile.

Questions & Answers

  • How far can QSFP-100G-SM-SR reach over single-mode fiber?

QSFP-100G-SM-SR reaches 2 km over duplex single-mode fiber with duplex LC connectors. The 2 km reach is specified for G.652 fiber within a 4.2 dB optical link budget, so connectors and patch panels in the path count against that budget.
  • What operating temperature range does QSFP-100G-SM-SR support?

QSFP-100G-SM-SR is rated for +10 to +60°C operation. The module belongs in a temperature-controlled data hall, and a site that drops below the bottom of that range falls outside the specified operating window for the module.
  • Can QDD-2X100-CWDM4-S break out to two QSFP-100G-SM-SR modules?

Yes, QDD-2X100-CWDM4-S can break out to two QSFP-100G-SM-SR modules. This 200G to 100G (x2) performance level runs 2km over duplex single-mode fiber. The QDD-2X100-CWDM4-S end uses dual duplex CS connectors and each QSFP-100G-SM-SR end uses duplex LC. Cisco lists it in table 3 of the breakout guide only.
  • What optical link budget does QSFP-100G-SM-SR give for patch-panel loss?

The link budget is 4.2 dB, where the CWDM4 MSA specifies 5.0 dB. Per Cisco's guidance, the 4.2 dB budget supports patch-panel loss in a data center environment. Count every connector pair in the 2km path against that figure before you order the patch cords.
  • What is the receive power range of QSFP-100G-SM-SR?

The receive power range is +2.5 dBm maximum and -11.1 dBm minimum. Use these limits when you check the received level on a short 2km path. QSFP-100G-SM-SR interoperates with QSFP-100G-CWDM4-S at the far end, according to the datasheet.
  • What is the CWDM4-Lite name for QSFP-100G-SM-SR in Cisco documents?

Cisco documents describe QSFP-100G-SM-SR as Single-Mode Fiber Short Reach, also known as CWDM4-Lite. It is a variant of QSFP-100G-CWDM4-S. Search the Cisco 100G optics guides under either name when you check the module, and use the PID QSFP-100G-SM-SR itself when you place the order with your supplier.
