How to choose a Cisco switch based on configuration requirements

Enter requirements in the same order as the selector: the devices connected to the switch first, then uplinks, power, features and deployment conditions.

The Cisco switch selector turns your network requirements into filters. Enter only the ones that matter to your project; a model appears only when that one model meets every requirement you set.

Define downlink ports

Enter the number of user, server, access point, phone or camera connections required on each switch. Select copper or optical media and the required port speed when they are specified.

Confirm uplink requirements

Specify the number, media and speed of uplinks required for connections to the distribution layer, core network or servers.

Enter PoE requirements

Select PoE, PoE+, Cisco UPOE or Cisco UPOE+, then enter the powered-port count and minimum total PoE budget.

Check performance and features

Apply forwarding rate, switching capacity and required features such as OSPF, BGP, VRF-Lite, MACsec or PTP when they appear in the specification.

Confirm stacking, installation method, input power, license level and price range before reviewing matching Cisco switch models.

How the Cisco switch selector matches models

A model appears only when its published Cisco specifications confirm every requirement you set. If Cisco doesn’t publish a value, we leave the model out rather than guess, so a model you expected may be missing. Check it directly in the Cisco Comparison Tool. PoE budget is matched against each model’s maximum, which may need optional power supplies or expansion hardware.

The selector compares your required total with each model’s maximum PoE budget. Some models reach that maximum only with optional power supplies or expansion hardware.
