QSFP-100G-ZR4-S Description
The QSFP-100G-ZR4-S is a Cisco 100GBASE-ZR4 QSFP28 transceiver for metro and regional 100G links of up to 80 km over duplex single-mode fiber. The module uses four wavelengths from 1295 to 1309 nm on duplex LC connectors, draws up to 5.5W and operates from 0 to 70 degrees C. The module needs RS-FEC from the host port, and it does not interoperate with 100G coherent transceivers or with optics that skip RS-FEC, such as LR4.

A service-provider aggregation point or remote hub site can be reached over a single duplex G.652 fiber pair of up to 80 km, because the module’s built-in SOA removes the need for an external amplifier.
Two data centers in the same region can join their 100G QSFP28 ports across dark fiber when the host ports supply RS-FEC and the span stays within the 29 dB link loss that the 80 km figure assumes.

QSFP-100G-ZR4-S is the only optic in this group that reaches 80 km on duplex LC single-mode fiber, against 40 km with host FEC for QSFP-100G-ER4L-S and QSFP-100G-4W40-I and 10 km for QSFP-100G-LR4-S, and it draws 5.5W and always needs RS-FEC from the host. Links of 40 km or less fit QSFP-100G-ER4L-S at 4.5W, or QSFP-100G-4W40-I where an I-Temp optic is wanted. Hosts that cannot provide RS-FEC need QSFP-100G-LR4-S, which does not use FEC but stops at 10 km. QSFP-100G-ZR4-S runs in 100G mode only, so a 4x25G breakout design needs a different optic.
Ordering Checklist
- Host support: Confirm the target platform and QSFP28 port are listed for QSFP-100G-ZR4-S in Cisco’s Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix (tmgmatrix.cisco.com). Power and cooling are validated per platform because the module draws 5.5W.
- Patch cords: Order duplex LC UPC single-mode jumpers on G.652 fiber. The connector note for this family covers PC or UPC jumpers only.
- Link attenuation: Add fixed attenuators when the link is shorter than about 20 km (about 11 dB minimum attenuation over both ends). Below the minimum distance the receive level is too high.
- Far-end optic: Use a Cisco optic from the interoperability matrix (tmgmatrix.cisco.com/iop) on the remote side. The module does not interoperate with 100G coherent transceivers or with optics that do not use RS-FEC, such as LR4, and other vendors are not generally tested.
