GLC-EX-SMD Description
The GLC-EX-SMD is a Cisco 1000BASE-EX SFP transceiver for 1G links of up to 40 km over G.652 single-mode fiber. The module transmits at 1310 nm on dual LC/PC connectors, allows 18 dB of channel insertion loss and operates from -5 to 85°C with DOM support. The module supports single-mode fiber only, and back-to-back links need a 5 dB inline attenuator in front of each receiver.

Application Scenarios
Two sites tens of kilometers apart can be joined by a Gigabit Ethernet link between SFP ports over G.652 single-mode fiber, with the module covering spans of up to 40 km at 1310 nm.
At a metro aggregation point, a switch SFP uplink can reach a remote site over a long fiber span while DOM gives the operations team optical monitoring data from the module.

GLC-EX-SMD is the 40 km, 1310 nm single-mode model of this group: it reaches 40,000 m over G.652 SMF with 18 dB of allowed channel insertion loss, while GLC-LH-SMD on the same wavelength stops at 10,000 m and 6 dB, and in exchange also runs over multimode fiber to 550 m. Links that need more than 40 km, up to about 70 km depending on link loss, move to GLC-ZX-SMD, which transmits at 1550 nm and allows 21 dB of loss. GLC-LH-SMD is the better fit when a span is 10 km or less, or when part of the plant is multimode, because GLC-EX-SMD supports single-mode fiber only.
Ordering Checklist
- Fiber plant: Use G.652 single-mode fiber on every span; GLC-EX-SMD has no multimode support. An EX optic on multimode cabling will not form the link.
- Inline attenuator: Add a 5-dB inline optical attenuator in front of each receiver on back-to-back links; the datasheet ordering table does not include it. Without it the receiver is overloaded on short spans and lab runs.
- Host support: Confirm the target switch or router model and its SFP port are on the Transceiver Modules Compatibility list for GLC-EX-SMD. A host can reject an optic that fits the cage but is not on its supported list.
