GLC-EX-SMD Description

Cisco GLC-EX-SMD is a 1000BASE-EX Gigabit Ethernet SFP transceiver designed for long-distance single-mode fiber applications. Operating at 1310 nm, it supports transmission distances of up to 40 km on G.652 SMF. This module is hot-swappable, features a duplex LC connector, and includes Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) for real-time link performance diagnostics.
With its extended temperature rating (-5°C to 85°C), the GLC-EX-SMD provides reliable operation in demanding environments such as metropolitan networks, campus backbones, and long-range enterprise access links. For deployments requiring shorter spans, inline optical attenuators may be used to prevent receiver overload.

Needed that extra reach (40km) where LH wouldn’t work. These are solid.

Questions & Answers

  • What does Cisco GLC-EX-SMD provide?

A 1000BASE-EX single-mode SFP supporting extended reach around ~40 km with proper fiber and loss budgets, useful for metro or long campus backbones at 1 Gbps.
  • How does GLC-EX-SMD compare to GLC-ZX-SMD?

EX targets ~40 km; ZX is designed for longer spans near ~80 km. Choose based on required distance and attenuation planning.
  • Is an attenuator needed on short links?

Potentially, yes. Long-reach optics can overload receivers at short distances. Use appropriate attenuation per power readings.
  • What fiber type is used?

Single-mode fiber (SMF). Verify connectors and cleanliness; long-reach optics are sensitive to contamination.
  • Typical use cases?

Remote building interconnects, metro access links, and long ring spurs where 1 Gbps is sufficient.
  • Does it support DOM?

Yes, “SMD” variants typically include DOM for optical power and temperature monitoring.
  • Any interoperability notes?

Match optics on both ends for best results. Confirm device support lists and software versions.
  • How to maintain link quality?

Monitor optical budgets, clean connectors regularly, and keep spare optics/attenuators for rapid recovery.
