Questions & Answers

  • What is Cisco GLC-SX-MMD used for?

A 1000BASE-SX multimode SFP supporting distances up to ~550 m on OM2/OM3/OM4 fiber, ideal for intra-building uplinks and short campus runs at 1 Gbps.
  • How does GLC-SX-MMD differ from GLC-LH-SMD?

GLC-SX-MMD targets shorter multimode distances, while GLC-LH-SMD is single-mode for ~10 km. Choose SX for short, LH for longer risers or outdoor links.
  • Is Digital Optical Monitoring available?

Yes, the “MMD” variant typically supports DOM, allowing you to view transmit/receive power, temperature, and voltage for proactive troubleshooting.
  • What fiber and connectors are required?

Use multimode fiber (OM2 or better) with LC connectors. Keep ferrules clean and inspect regularly to maintain link quality.
  • Can it interoperate with third-party optics?

Use Cisco-approved optics for assured support. If mixing vendors, validate wavelength and power budgets in lab tests.
  • Typical scenarios?

Wiring closet uplinks, server room connections, and short campus interconnects.
  • Any limitations to note?

Multimode links are more sensitive to modal dispersion and require proper fiber grade. For very long links, move to single-mode.
  • Troubleshooting tips?

Check DOM levels, clean connectors, verify patch types, and confirm interface settings and errors.
