QSFP-100G-ER4L-S Description
The QSFP-100G-ER4L-S is a Cisco 100G ER4-Lite QSFP transceiver for long 100G links of up to 40km over a duplex LC single-mode fiber pair. The module multiplexes four wavelengths from 1295 to 1309 nm, draws up to 4.5W and operates from 0 to 70 degrees C. The full 40km reach needs FEC on the host port, and without host FEC the reach is 30km.

Application Scenarios
Two data centers in the same metro area up to 40km apart can join their 100G switch ports over a duplex single-mode pair, with the host port supplying FEC for the full distance.
A 100G link to older CPAK ER4-Lite ports runs up to 25km, and a link to IEEE 100GBASE-ER4 ports such as CFP 100G ER4 runs up to 30km, because the module interoperates with both.

QSFP-100G-ER4L-S reaches 40km with host FEC and 30km without it, against 25km for QSFP-100G-ERL-S, which uses a single PAM4 wavelength with onboard FEC at 4.0W, so links between 25km and 40km need QSFP-100G-ER4L-S and a host that supplies FEC. Links of 10km or less can use QSFP-100G-LR4-S at 4.0W, which runs IEEE 100GBASE-LR4 without FEC. Sites outside 0 to 70 degrees C need QSFP-100G-4W40-I, which has the same 40km and 30km reach boundary and 4.5W draw but operates from -40 to 85 degrees C.
Ordering Checklist
- Host support: Confirm the host switch or router is listed for this optic in the Cisco 100 Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver Modules Compatibility Matrix. The datasheet leaves exact hosts to the matrix, and a QSFP28 cage alone does not make the optic supported.
- Host FEC: Use a host port that provides FEC if the link is longer than 30km. Without host FEC the reach is 30km, not the 40km of the ordering description.
- Patch cords: Order duplex LC patch cords with PC or UPC connectors, not APC. Only PC or UPC jumpers are allowed on QSFP-100G-ER4L-S; APC is documented for QSFP-100G-PSM4-S only.
