QSFP-40G-CSR4 Description
The QSFP-40G-CSR4 is a Cisco 40GBASE-CSR4 QSFP transceiver for 40G links over parallel multimode fiber in data centers. The module uses an MPO-12 connector with four 10G lanes at 850 nm, reaches 300 m on OM3 and 400 m on OM4 or OM5, and draws 1.5W within a 0 to 70°C operating range. The module also runs 4x10G breakout to four 10GBASE-SR interfaces through a parallel-to-duplex breakout cable, which is a separate item.

Application Scenarios
In a data center where the spine and leaf rows are joined by 12-fiber MPO trunks, the module carries native 40G over runs of up to 300 m on OM3 or 400 m on OM4 or OM5, past the distance of an SR4 optic.
A QSFP 40G port on an aggregation switch can feed four 10GBASE-SR server ports in a distant row, using the 4x10G mode with a parallel-to-duplex breakout cable over the same multimode plant.

QSFP-40G-CSR4 and QSFP-40G-SR4 share the MPO or MTP parallel multimode path, 1.5W power and 4x10G breakout through a parallel-to-duplex cable, but CSR4 reaches 300m on OM3 and 400m on OM4 or OM5 where QSFP-40G-SR4 stops at 100m and 150m. Links that fit within those shorter limits can use QSFP-40G-SR4. Sites cabled with two-strand duplex LC fiber need a different module: QSFP-40G-CSR-S matches the 300m OM3 reach and extends to 440m on OM5, while QSFP-40G-SR-BD stops at 100m on OM3 and 150m on OM4 or OM5. Both LC modules draw 3.5W against 1.5W, and neither is an SR4 breakout optic, so a 4x10G design stays on CSR4 or QSFP-40G-SR4.
Ordering Checklist
- Host support: Confirm the target platform is a listed host for this optic, for example Nexus 3000 N3K-C3132Q-40GE, Nexus 5500 N5K-C55XX, Nexus 6000 N6004-96Q, NCS 5500 NC55-36X100G, ASR 9000 A9K-MPA-1X40GE or Firepower FPR4K-NM-4X40G. A host can reject an optic that fits the QSFP cage but is not on its compatibility list.
- Fiber connector: Order 12-fiber MPO/MTP female trunk or patch cords. The module is keyed and has an MPO-12 interface, so duplex LC cords do not fit.
- Breakout cable: For 4x10G, order a parallel-to-duplex breakout cable to four 10GBASE-SR ports separately. The module alone cannot connect to four 10G SFP+ ports.
