DS-SFP-FC16G-SW Description
The DS-SFP-FC16G-SW is a Cisco MDS 9000 Series 16-Gbps Fibre Channel shortwave SFP+ transceiver for short multimode SAN links inside a data center. The transceiver autosenses 4, 8 and 16 Gbps on a dual LC interface at 850 nm, and its 16G reach is 15 m on OM1, 35 m on OM2, 100 m on OM3 and 125 m on OM4 or OM5. On the MDS 9124V, 9148V and 9396V the optic is supported only from release 9.3(x), not on 9.2(x).

Application Scenarios
Inside one data center hall, an MDS 9000 Series switch connects to a storage array over duplex LC multimode fiber. The 16G reach of 100 m on OM3 and 125 m on OM4 or OM5 covers most row-to-row runs.
Existing 4G and 8G arrays stay connected while a fabric moves to 16G ports. The transceiver autosenses 4, 8 and 16 Gbps over 850 nm fiber, and the 8G reach is 190 m on OM4.

DS-SFP-FC16G-SW is the 850 nm multimode model: at 16 Gbps it reaches 15 m on OM1, 35 m on OM2, 100 m on OM3 and 125 m on OM4 or OM5. Any run beyond that, or any single-mode OS2 route, needs DS-SFP-FC16G-LW at 10 km, which transmits at -5.0 to 2.0 dBm against -7.8 to -1.3 dBm here. A route that must go beyond 10 km needs DS-SFP-FC16GELW, documented for 25 km. All three optics autosense 4/8/16 Gbps on LC connectors. Cisco lists DS-SFP-FC16G-SW on MDS 9124V, 9148V and 9396V only from release 9.3(x), not on 9.2(x).
Ordering Checklist
- Host support: Confirm the host is an MDS 9132T, 9148T, 9396T, 9220i, 9250i, 9148S or 9396S switch, or a DS-X9334-K9, DS-X9448-768K9 or DS-X9648-1536K9 module. This optic is listed only for specific MDS hosts, so a generic SFP+ port elsewhere is not covered.
- Fiber grade: Check the installed multimode grade (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 or OM5) against the 16G reach of 15, 35, 100 or 125 m. The shortwave optic only links over multimode fiber, and reach depends on the grade.
- Spare PID: Order DS-SFP-FC16G-SW= when the order is for a spare. Each spare is listed under its own PID with an equals sign.
