SFP-10G-ER Description
The SFP-10G-ER is a Cisco 10GBASE-ER SFP+ transceiver for 40 km 10G Ethernet links over single-mode fiber between buildings or sites. The module runs at 1550 nm on G.652 fiber with dual LC connectors, draws up to 1.5W and operates from 0 to 70°C. Links shorter than 20 km need a 5 dB 1550 nm fixed-loss attenuator, and paths longer than 30 km require verified cable loss.

A remote office or edge site 30 to 40 km from the core can reach it over one duplex fiber pair, and the cable loss is verified first because links beyond 30 km are engineered links.

SFP-10G-ER and SFP-10G-ZR both run 1550 nm over G.652 single-mode fiber, but SFP-10G-ER is documented for up to 40 km at 1.5W while SFP-10G-ZR reaches up to about 80 km, so spans beyond 40 km need SFP-10G-ZR. SFP-10G-LR is the 1310 nm option at 10 km and 1W, and it suits links of 10 km or less without the attenuator that SFP-10G-ER needs under 20 km. The latch color tells the three apart in the rack: red for SFP-10G-ER, green for SFP-10G-ZR and blue for SFP-10G-LR. Sites that need the -40 to 85 degrees C industrial range order SFP-10G-ER-I instead, and Cisco’s S-Class line SFP-10G-ER-S does not support FCoE.
Ordering Checklist
- Fiber type: Use standard G.652 single-mode fiber carrying 1550 nm. The 40 km ER class is specified only for 1550 nm single-mode fiber.
- Short-link attenuator: For links under 20 km, add a 5 dB 1550 nm fixed-loss attenuator, spare part 15216 ATT LC 5=. Without it the receiver can be overloaded on a short ER span.
- Spans beyond 30 km: Verify cable loss values for any path over 30 km. Links longer than 30 km are treated as engineered links.
