SFP-10G-ER-S Description
The SFP-10G-ER-S is a Cisco 10GBASE-ER S-Class SFP+ transceiver for 40 km 10G Ethernet links over single-mode fiber. The module runs at 1550 nm on G.652 fiber with dual LC connectors, draws up to 1.5W and operates from 0 to 70°C. The S-Class module does not support FCoE, and links shorter than 20 km need a 5 dB 1550 nm fixed-loss attenuator.

On a 40 km single-mode route that carries only Ethernet traffic, the module links two SFP+ host ports at 10G, since the S-Class module does not support FCoE.
Between distant campus buildings or sites on G.652 fiber, the module covers spans that exceed the 10 km LR class, reaching up to 40 km at 1550 nm.

SFP-10G-ER-S and SFP-10G-ER share the 40 km reach, 1550 nm wavelength, G.652 single-mode fiber, 1.5W maximum power and commercial 0 to 70 degrees C range, so the split is module class: SFP-10G-ER-S is the S-Class order and Cisco documents no FCoE support for it. Links that carry FCoE need a non-S-Class module such as SFP-10G-ER, which is the plain 10GBASE-ER listing. Sites that need the -40 to 85 degrees C industrial range, or the 10GBASE-EW and OTU2/2e scope, order SFP-10G-ER-I, the multirate industrial ER module with the same 40 km reach.
