The N9K-C9504-B3-E is a Cisco Nexus 9500 Series modular chassis bundle for data center spine and aggregation switching. The 7RU Nexus 9504 chassis has four line-card slots and comes with four N9K-C9504-FM-E fabric modules at 800 Gbps per slot, one supervisor, three power supplies, two system controllers and three fan trays. The FM-E modules support Cisco ACI and NX-OS, but N9K-X9732C-FX and N9K-X9788TC-FX line cards run NX-OS only on them.

Key Features
The 84 lb chassis fits in 7RU and holds up to four line cards. Line cards plug straight into the fabric modules because the design has no midplane.
Each N9K-C9504-FM-E gives every line-card slot 800 Gbps and 3,200 Gbps in total. Four modules go in slots FM2, FM3, FM4 and FM6, and all fabric modules in a chassis must be the same type.
N9K-X9732C-EX, N9K-X9732C-FX and N9K-X9788TC-FX all reach full bandwidth on four FM-E modules. Fabric redundancy of 4+1 adds a fifth module and works only when every line card is an N9K-X9732C-FX.
The FM-E modules support both Cisco ACI and NX-OS. Of the common 100G cards, only N9K-X9732C-EX serves as an ACI spine, and ACI-mode and NX-OS-mode line cards cannot share a chassis.
Three 3000W supplies come installed in the four power positions. They deliver 9,000W combined, 6,000W in n+1 mode and 3,000W in n+n mode, and a fourth supply raises those figures to 12,000W, 9,000W and 6,000W.
One supervisor and two N9K-SC-A system controllers run the chassis. The three fan trays move air port-side intake, and the chassis keeps running on two trays while one is replaced.
Application Scenarios
In a data center built on Cisco ACI, the chassis acts as a spine, with N9K-X9732C-EX line cards connecting leaf switches over 100G QSFP28 ports through the FM-E fabric.
A data center running NX-OS can aggregate leaf switches on N9K-X9732C-FX line cards, which add MACsec on the 100G links between rows.
Where servers are still cabled with 10GBASE-T, N9K-X9788TC-FX line cards provide 48 copper ports and four 100G QSFP28 ports in each of the four slots.

N9K-C9504-B3-E and N9K-C9504-B3-S are the same 4-slot Nexus 9504 bundle except for the fabric modules: four N9K-C9504-FM-E modules that run ACI and NX-OS, against four N9K-C9504-FM-S modules that run NX-OS only, so ACI spine designs need the E bundle. A design that needs more than 4 line-card slots moves to N9K-C9508-B3-E, which keeps four FM-E modules in an 8-slot, 13RU chassis. Full bandwidth on N9K-X9732C-EX, N9K-X9732C-FX or N9K-X9788TC-FX takes four FM-E, while 4+1 fabric redundancy needs a fifth N9K-C9504-FM-E and a chassis holding only N9K-X9732C-FX cards. For 1.6 Tbps per slot, order N9K-C9504-FM-G with N9K-C9504-FAN2 fan trays instead.
Ordering Checklist
- Power supply type: Select N9K-PAC-3000W-B (AC), N9K-PUV-3000W-B (universal AC/DC, selected with N9K-SELECT-C95PUV) or N9K-PDC-3000W-B (-48V DC). Supplies added later must match the type already installed; AC and DC types are not mixed in one chassis.
- Power cords: Add CAB-AC-STRT-C19US for US NEMA 6-20, CAB-AC-2500W-EU for Europe, CAB-AC-2500W-INT for international sites, or NO-PWR-CORD for no cord. The 3 kW AC supplies need a region-specific C19 cord; NO-PWR-CORD ships the order without one.
- Power slot cover: Add N9K-C9500-P-CV= for each empty power supply slot (the bundle fills 3 of 4). Without it an open power slot is left uncovered.
- Fabric module slots: Install four N9K-C9504-FM-E in FM 2, 3, 4 and 6, and fit N9K-C9504-FM-CV in empty FM slots. Only fixed slot patterns are allowed for 3, 4, 5 or 6 fabric modules, and open FM slots need covers.
- Line cards: Select N9K-X9732C-EX, N9K-X9732C-FX or N9K-X9788TC-FX with N9K-C9504-FM-E; full bandwidth takes four FM-E, and 4+1 fabric redundancy takes a fifth FM-E and an all-N9K-X9732C-FX chassis. The bundle ships without line cards, and the fabric module count decides whether the cards run at full bandwidth.
- Rack-mount kit: Add N9K-C9504-RMK= for the Nexus 9504, listed as its own ordering PID. N9K-C9500-RMK= is the 9508 and 9516 kit.
