N9K-SUP-B Description
The N9K-SUP-B is a Cisco Nexus 9500 Series supervisor module for the Nexus 9504, 9508 and 9516 modular data center chassis. The module has a 6-core, 12-thread 2.2GHz x86 processor, 24GB of DRAM and a 256GB SSD, and it draws 75W typical and 80W maximum. Each chassis holds up to two supervisors, and the pair must be the same supervisor type to run as a state-synchronized active-standby set.

Application Scenarios
In a Nexus 9508 data center chassis, two supervisors of this type run as a state-synchronized active-standby pair, so the standby takes over control-plane duties without rebuilding state.
A Nexus 9504 or 9508 populated with -R or -R2 line cards needs a Supervisor B, because the older Supervisor A and A+ modules are not supported with those line cards.

N9K-SUP-B separates from N9K-SUP-A and N9K-SUP-A+ by its 6-core, 12-thread processor, 24GB of DRAM and 256GB SSD, against 4 cores, 16GB and 64GB on both older modules. N9K-SUP-A and N9K-SUP-A+ are not supported in Nexus 9504 or 9508 chassis with -R or -R2 line cards, so those chassis need N9K-SUP-B. A design that needs 32GB of DRAM moves to N9K-SUP-B+. Redundant supervisors must be the same type, so a chassis running N9K-SUP-A or N9K-SUP-A+ is migrated to a matched pair of N9K-SUP-B modules rather than left mixed.
Ordering Checklist
- Nexus 9500 chassis: Use the supervisor in an N9K-C9504, N9K-C9508 or N9K-C9516. It is shared across the three Nexus 9500 chassis and does not fit other Nexus platforms.
- Second supervisor: Add a second N9K-SUP-B(=) for a redundant pair, not N9K-SUP-A or N9K-SUP-A+. Each chassis holds up to two supervisors, and a redundant pair must be the same type.
