The 7 RU chassis holds 4 line cards, up to 6 fabric modules of one type, 2 supervisors and 4 power supplies, and each FM-G fabric module adds up to 1.6 Tbps to every line card slot. Supervisors, system controllers, fabric modules, fan trays and power supplies are ordered as separate PIDs, or together in the N9K-C9504-B3-E bundle.

Key Features
Line cards connect straight to the fabric modules, because the chassis has no midplane. Supervisors, system controllers, power supplies and line cards are the same parts used across the Nexus 9500 chassis family; only the fabric modules and fan trays are specific to the 4-slot chassis.
Each fabric module adds its own share to every line card slot: 800 Gbps from an N9K-C9504-FM-E and up to 1.6 Tbps from an N9K-C9504-FM-G. The chassis takes up to six fabric modules, and all of them must be the same type.
N9K-X9716D-GX, with 16 ports of 400G QSFP-DD, runs in this chassis only on FM-G fabric modules. FM-G modules in turn need N9K-C9504-FAN2 fan trays, and every empty fabric slot then takes an N9K-C9504-FAN-PWR connector instead of a blank.
Three fabric modules go in FM 2, FM 4 and FM 6; four go in FM 2, FM 3, FM 4 and FM 6. Slot FM 5 serves only N9K-X9736C-FX, N9K-X9736Q-FX and N9K-X9736C-FX3, and a chassis that mixes EX, FX, FX3 and GX line cards runs at most four fabric modules.
Four bays take 3 kW AC, DC or universal supplies, or the 3.15 kW dual-input universal unit. On a 220 V input, four 3 kW supplies provide 12,000W in combined mode, 9,000W in n+1 or 6,000W in n+n, and every supply must match the AC or DC type already installed.
Two supervisors of the same type run active-standby, while two N9K-SC-A system controllers manage the power supplies and fan trays. Cooling continues on two of the three fan trays while one is swapped; removing a second tray shuts the switch down within two minutes.
Application Scenarios
In a Cisco ACI fabric, the chassis serves as a spine, with N9K-X9732C-EX line cards on N9K-C9504-FM-E fabric modules terminating 100G QSFP28 links from the leaf switches.
A data center running NX-OS can place the chassis at its core or border, where it routes between pods using VXLAN with a BGP-EVPN control plane.
At the end of a server row, N9K-X9788TC-FX line cards give each slot 48 copper ports at 100M, 1G or 10G for rack servers, plus four 40/100G QSFP28 ports toward the spine.

N9K-C9504 and N9K-C9504-B3-E share the same 4-slot, 7 RU chassis, but N9K-C9504 is the chassis alone, while N9K-C9504-B3-E adds 1 supervisor, 3 power supplies, 2 system controllers, 4 N9K-C9504-FM-E fabric modules and 3 fan trays. A build planned around 1.6 Tbps per slot from FM-G fabric modules and FAN2 trays starts from N9K-C9504, since every fabric module in a chassis must be the same type and the bundle carries FM-E. More than four line cards moves the design to N9K-C9508, with 8 line card slots and 8 power supply slots in 13 RU and the same FM-G option. N9K-C9516 reaches 16 slots and 10 power supply slots in 21 RU, but its fabric stops at 800 Gbps per slot because no FM-G exists for it.
Ordering Checklist
- Supervisors and controllers: Add one or two supervisors from N9K-SUP-A, N9K-SUP-A+, N9K-SUP-B or N9K-SUP-B+, plus two N9K-SC-A system controllers. A redundant supervisor pair must be the same type.
- Fabric modules and fan trays: Pair N9K-C9504-FM-E with N9K-C9504-FAN trays and N9K-C9504-FM-CV blanks, or N9K-C9504-FM-G with N9K-C9504-FAN2 trays and N9K-C9504-FAN-PWR in empty slots. FM-G modules do not run on first-generation trays.
- Fabric module count: Four N9K-C9504-FM-E give full bandwidth to N9K-X9732C-EX, N9K-X9732C-FX and N9K-X9788TC-FX, while N9K-X9736C-FX needs five. Fewer modules leave the line cards below full bandwidth.
- Power supplies: Add module maximum power, divide by 3000W and round up, then add one for n+1. Choose N9K-PAC-3000W-B, N9K-PUV-3000W-B, N9K-PUV2-3000W-B or N9K-PDC-3000W-B without mixing AC and DC types.
- Power cords: Select CAB-AC-STRT-C19US, CAB-AC-2500W-US1, CAB-AC-2500W-EU or CAB-AC-2500W-INT for each 3 kW AC supply. NO-PWR-CORD ships the order with no cord.
- Rack-mount kit: Add N9K-C9504-RMK= for this chassis. N9K-C9500-RMK= is the kit for the N9K-C9508 and N9K-C9516 chassis.
