C9300-NM-8X Description
The C9300-NM-8X is a Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series field-replaceable network module for standard Catalyst 9300 modular-uplink switches, adding eight 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ slots that each run at 1GE or 10GE and accept any mix of SFP and SFP+ optics. It installs in the uplink bay of a C9300 (non-X) modular-uplink chassis, is hot-swappable, and is the default network module Cisco ships on new modular-uplink C9300 orders unless a different module is selected. The module carries no separate software subscription requirement, and Cisco documentation confines its host compatibility to Catalyst 9300 (non-X) SKUs, since Catalyst 9300X switches use a separate C9300X-NM module family that is not cross-compatible.

Application Scenarios
Installed in the uplink bay of a Catalyst 9300 modular-uplink access switch to aggregate 10G links from the access layer toward distribution or core equipment.
Populated with 1G SFP optics across the eight slots when a C9300 deployment needs additional 1G uplinks rather than 10G, since each of the eight ports independently supports 1GE or 10GE.
Used as a like-for-like spare part for Catalyst 9300 modular-uplink switches, since Cisco ships C9300-NM-8X as the default network module on new modular-uplink orders.

- C9300-NM-8X vs C9300-NM-2Q is primarily a port-count-and-speed-class difference: the current SKU provides eight 10G/1G SFP+ slots for higher port density, while C9300-NM-2Q provides two 40G QSFP+ slots for fewer, faster uplinks with optional 4x10G breakout.
- C9300-NM-8X vs C9300-NM-4G is a speed-tier difference on the same SFP form factor family: the current SKU supports 1GE or 10GE per port across eight slots, while C9300-NM-4G is limited to 1GE across four slots.
- All three modules share the same Catalyst 9300 (non-X) platform boundary, so the module selection is not a platform-compatibility question but a question of how many uplink ports are needed and at what speed.
- Because C9300-NM-8X ships as the default network module on new C9300 modular-uplink orders, an order that needs the 40G QSFP+ or 4-port 1G SFP layout instead must explicitly select C9300-NM-2Q or C9300-NM-4G rather than accepting the default.
Selection Guide
1. Confirm The Host Is Non-X Catalyst 9300
C9300-NM-8X is documented only against Catalyst 9300 (non-X) modular-uplink SKUs; a Catalyst 9300X target switch needs a C9300X-NM module instead, since the two module families are not cross-compatible.
2. Match Port Count And Speed Tier To The Uplink Plan
An uplink design that needs eight independently 1G/10G-capable SFP+ ports fits C9300-NM-8X, while a design that needs only two higher-speed 40G QSFP+ links (with optional 4x10G breakout) is better matched to C9300-NM-2Q, and a design that only needs four fixed 1G uplinks can move to the lower-cost C9300-NM-4G instead.
3. Do Not Assume The Default Module Is Always Correct
Because Cisco ships C9300-NM-8X as the default network module on new C9300 modular-uplink orders, an order intended for a different uplink module must override that default selection at time of order rather than relying on the factory default.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Exact module PID |
C9300-NM-8X on the order line, not C9300-NM-2Q, C9300-NM-4G, or a C9300X-NM module |
Prevents receiving a module with the wrong port count, speed, or host-platform boundary |
|
Switch platform |
Target switch is a Catalyst 9300 (non-X) modular-uplink SKU |
C9300X, C9300L, and C9300LM switches cannot take this module |
|
Default order override |
Whether the order should keep the default C9300-NM-8X selection or switch to another C9300-NM module or C9300-NM-NONE |
Avoids receiving the default module when a different uplink module was actually intended |
|
Blank module need |
Whether an uplink slot will be left empty and needs a C9300-NM-BLANK |
An empty slot without a blank module can disrupt chassis airflow |
|
Spare vs new-build ordering |
C9300-NM-8X for factory-installed ordering or C9300-NM-8X= for spare/replacement ordering |
Keeps the PID aligned with the intended ordering path |
