IE-9320-26S2C-A Description

The IE-9320-26S2C-A is the all-fiber stackable model of the Cisco Catalyst IE9300 Rugged Series, a fanless 1RU rack-mount industrial switch that presents 22 Gigabit SFP downlinks, 2 dual-media combo downlinks, and 4 Gigabit SFP uplinks under the perpetual Network Advantage license. Cisco StackWise joins up to four units into one managed node, and two field-replaceable power modules with electrically isolated outputs feed the chassis from AC or DC. Its utility-grade credentials run deep: IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 substation compliance, IEC 61850-9-3 Power Utility Profile timing, HSR and PRP seamless redundancy with TrustSec over PRP, and hazardous-location approvals. The Advantage tier adds BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite, BGP-EVPN over VXLAN, TrustSec segmentation, MACsec-256, L3 NAT, multicast routing, and SD-Access Fabric Edge duty above an Essentials baseline that already carries OSPF, REP, MRP over Stacking, PROFINET, CIP, and PTP Power Profile - making this the fiber aggregation point for substations, ITS corridors, and dispersed process plants.

Key Features

Twenty-Six Fiber-Ready Slots

The 22 SFP downlinks, 2 combo ports, and 4 SFP uplinks take everything from 100M FE optics to 80 km BX single-strand and CWDM/DWDM modules, terminating long fiber runs from bays, cabinets, and field sites in one rugged chassis.

One Node From Four Chassis

StackWise links up to four IE9320 units through dual stack ports into a single management plane, and MRP over Stacking extends ring redundancy across the members – a capability the non-stackable IE9310 line does not offer.

Fabric-Class Advantage License

BGP, EIGRP, IS-IS, VRF-lite, BGP-EVPN over VXLAN, and SD-Access Fabric Edge Node roles ship perpetually on this PID, letting the aggregation layer join a campus or utility fabric rather than terminating at static routes.

Seamless Duplication With Policy

As a 26S2C model it runs HSR and PRP with PTP over PRP, and the -A license adds TrustSec over PRP, so zero-loss duplicated paths carry group-based policy into protection-relay and control networks.

Substation Timing Discipline

IEC 61850-9-3 Power Utility Profile, PTP Power Profile 2011/2017, and NTP-PTP interworking meet grid synchronization requirements, with IEEE 1613 and IEC 61850-3 compliance covering the electrical environment itself.

Isolated Dual Supply Modules

Two field-replaceable power slots accept 150W low-voltage DC, 150W/250W/400W AC-DC modules with electrically isolated outputs and hazardous-location compliance, giving true A/B feed redundancy in a 1RU footprint.

Application Scenarios

Substation Bay Aggregation

Positioned in IEC 61850-3 control houses to terminate fiber from protection relays, merging units, and bay controllers, distributing Power Utility Profile timing while PRP keeps dual LANs lossless.

Fiber-Ring City Corridors

Aggregating intersection and roadside cabinets across ITS and smart-city networks under NEMA TS2:2021, where the 4 SFP uplinks and stackable chassis grow with each corridor phase.

Dispersed Process Sites

Serving mining, oil and gas, and water infrastructure where field devices sit kilometers apart on single-mode fiber and the switch itself must tolerate Class I Div 2 classified electrical rooms.

  • The IE-9320-26S2C-A and IE-9320-26S2C-E share identical stackable fiber hardware; because Essentials on this platform already includes OSPF, HSR/PRP, and MRP over Stacking, the -A premium buys specifically BGP/EIGRP, VRF-lite, TrustSec (including over PRP), MACsec-256, L3 NAT, multicast routing, and fabric roles – features a segmented utility or SD-Access design consumes on day one.
  • IE-9320-22S2C4X-A is the step up in backhaul and timing rather than access: the same 24 fiber downlinks gain 4x 10G uplinks, GNSS and IRIG-B time interfaces, and conformal coating, at 9W more draw and a lower MTBF, which matters when the uplinks aggregate multiple rings or the site is a timing source.
  • For deciding which SKU to order, fix the license question first – VRF, TrustSec, or fabric membership requires -A – then the uplink question: GE uplinks and this model close most bay-level roles, while 10G aggregation, GNSS timing, or corrosive-atmosphere coating move the order to IE-9320-22S2C4X-A.

Selection Guide

1. Advantage Where Segmentation Is Real

Utilities and plants that run VRF-separated OT domains, TrustSec policy, MACsec-256 on inter-site links, or SD-Access fabric edges need this -A PID; a fiber ring that only asks for OSPF and PRP can start on IE-9320-26S2C-E and upgrade in place with IE9300-NW-A= later.

2. Size The Stack, Not Just The Switch

Up to four chassis stack into one node with CAB-STK-0.5M= or CAB-STK-1M= cables, so a growing fiber plant can add 28-port members instead of new managed devices – order stack cables with the first pair, since MRP over Stacking assumes the ring spans members.

3. Optic Discipline On Combo Ports

Plan industrial -RGD or -I graded optics for temperature extremes, and keep GLC-TE/GLC-T/GLC-T-RGD copper SFPs off the design: they degrade PTP accuracy and are not supported on the two dual-media combo ports at all.

4. Power Modules Are A Separate Line

The chassis ships with two empty module slots; pick PWR-RGD-LOW-DC-H for 24-60V DC plants, PWR-RGD-AC-DC-H/-250/-400 for high-voltage AC/DC feeds, and order two modules whenever the site claims redundant A/B power.

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

Power module pair

Select the module class matching the site feed (24-60V DC or 85-264V AC / 88-300V DC) and order two for A/B redundancy.

The dual slots are empty at purchase, and mixed-voltage sites need the right module family per feed.

Optic bill of materials

Line up SFPs for up to 26 fiber positions plus 4 uplinks, using -RGD/-I grades where temperature demands.

Non-industrial optics derate the operating range, and the port count makes optics the larger order line.

Combo port usage

Decide SFP or RJ45 per dual-media port and avoid copper SFPs there.

GLC-T family modules are unsupported on combo ports and degrade PTP elsewhere.

Stack provisioning

Add CAB-STK-0.5M= / CAB-STK-1M= when more than one chassis is planned.

Stack ports without cables leave the second chassis as a separately managed switch.

Rack kit selection

Match RM-RGD-19IN=, RM-RGD-23IN=, or RM-RGD-ETSI= to the rack standard.

Substation and telecom racks differ, and the kits are ordered separately.

Timing feature scope

Confirm no GNSS/IRIG-B requirement sits at this node.

Those interfaces exist only on IE-9320-22S2C4X models; this PID cannot add them.

Questions & Answers

  • What is Cisco IE-9320-26S2C-A?

Cisco IE-9320-26S2C-A is the Network Advantage version of the IE9320 fiber-heavy rugged rackmount switch. It provides 22 SFP downlinks, 2 dual-media ports, and 4 100/1000M SFP uplinks for industrial aggregation and fiber access.
  • Who should choose IE-9320-26S2C-A?

Choose IE-9320-26S2C-A when the deployment needs the IE9320 fiber port layout plus Network Advantage capabilities from the start. It is a strong match for industrial networks where routing, segmentation, or advanced policy features are expected.
  • How does IE-9320-26S2C-A differ from IE-9320-26S2C-E?

The port hardware is the same, but IE-9320-26S2C-A includes Network Advantage by default and IE-9320-26S2C-E includes Network Essentials. The A model reduces licensing uncertainty when advanced features are required.
  • Does IE-9320-26S2C-A have 10G uplinks?

No. IE-9320-26S2C-A uses 4 100/1000M SFP uplinks. If the design needs 10G uplinks, review IE-9320-24T4X-E, IE-9320-24P4X-E, or other IE9320 4X models.
  • Is IE-9320-26S2C-A good for utility or transportation fiber networks?

Yes. Its high SFP density, rugged 1RU form factor, dual power input design, alarm contacts, and Network Advantage licensing make it well suited for fiber-centric utility, transportation, and industrial control networks.
  • Can IE-9320-26S2C-A be used for copper access?

It can support limited copper access through the 2 dual-media ports when RJ-45 is selected, but it is not a copper access switch. For 24 copper ports, IE-9320-24T4X-E is the more direct fit.
  • Does IE-9320-26S2C-A support stacking?

Yes. The IE9320 platform includes StackWise ports on applicable models, allowing multiple switches to be managed and scaled together. Buyers should validate the exact software release and stack design before rollout.
  • When is IE-9320-26S2C-A not the best choice?

IE-9320-26S2C-A is not the best choice if the design needs PoE, built-in 10G uplinks, or mostly copper access. Its value is strongest in fiber-heavy environments that also benefit from Network Advantage.
