IE-9320-26S2C-E Description
The IE-9320-26S2C-E brings the all-fiber stackable Catalyst IE9300 platform in at the Network Essentials tier: a fanless 1RU rack-mount rugged switch with 22 Gigabit SFP downlinks, 2 dual-media combo downlinks, and 4 Gigabit SFP uplinks, joined to as many as three more chassis over Cisco StackWise. Essentials on this platform is deliberately broad - OSPF with 1,000 routes, RIP, policy-based routing, REP and MRP rings with MRP over Stacking, HSR and PRP seamless redundancy with PTP over PRP, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP (CIP), GOOSE and SCADA classification, IEC 61850-9-3 Power Utility Profile timing, MACsec-128, and IOx edge compute all sit in the base license. That makes this PID a complete substation, ITS, and process aggregation node on its own, with the perpetual IE9300-NW-A= upgrade holding BGP, VRF-lite, TrustSec, MACsec-256, and fabric roles in reserve. Dual field-replaceable power modules, hazardous-location approvals, and a -40°C to +75°C envelope complete the utility-grade package.

Key Features
Unlike smaller IE families, this platform’s base license includes OSPF, OSPFv3, RIP, and policy-based routing, so a fiber aggregation node can run a routed access design without any license upgrade.
As a 26S2C model this PID runs HSR, PRP, and PTP over PRP at Essentials, delivering zero-loss duplicated LANs for protection and control traffic that most competing base tiers reserve for premium licenses.
StackWise joins up to four chassis with dual stack ports, and MRP over Stacking lets a media redundancy ring enter and leave different stack members, hardening the aggregation point itself.
All 26 downlink-side positions and 4 uplinks accept SFPs from FE grades through 80 km BX single-strand and CWDM/DWDM, with industrial -RGD and -I optics preserving the temperature envelope.
IEC 61850-9-3 Power Utility Profile, PTP Power Profile 2011/2017, NTP-PTP interworking, IEEE 1613, and IEC 61850-3 come with the platform, keeping this Essentials unit fully substation-eligible.
The perpetual IE9300-NW-A= license later activates BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite, BGP-EVPN over VXLAN, TrustSec with SGACL, MACsec-256, L3 NAT, and multicast routing on this same chassis, protecting the hardware investment.
Application Scenarios
Installed in substation control houses as the PRP RedBox layer for relays and merging units, where dual lossless LANs, 61850-9-3 timing, and IEEE 1613 compliance are the specification and Layer 2/OSPF duty fits Essentials.
Collecting traffic-signal and surveillance cabinets over municipal single-mode fiber, running OSPF and REP at the base tier while the stack grows one chassis per build-out phase.
Anchoring SCADA concentrations at pump stations, compressor sites, and renewable plants where GOOSE/SCADA classification, hazardous-location listing, and dual isolated supplies matter more than fabric features.

- Between the IE-9320-26S2C-E and IE-9320-26S2C-A nothing changes but the license on identical stackable hardware: -A activates BGP/EIGRP, VRF-lite, TrustSec including over PRP, MACsec-256, L3 NAT, multicast routing, and fabric roles, all of which this -E unit can adopt later through the perpetual IE9300-NW-A= upgrade.
- IE-9310-26S2C-E offers the same 28-port fiber layout and license tier without StackWise: it draws 3W less and posts a higher MTBF, but each chassis stays an individually managed node and MRP over Stacking is unavailable, which caps multi-chassis growth plans.
- For deciding which SKU to order, test the growth and policy axes separately: multi-chassis aggregation or stack-wide rings demand an IE9320 (this PID at Essentials), day-one segmentation or fabric membership moves to IE-9320-26S2C-A, and a permanently single-chassis fiber site can save with IE-9310-26S2C-E.
Selection Guide
1. What Essentials Already Solves
OSPF-routed access, REP/MRP rings, PRP-duplicated relay LANs, PTP Power Profile timing, PROFINET/CIP integration, and IOx sensors all run at this tier – audit the actual feature list before assuming the -A PID is required.
2. The Three Upgrade Triggers
Buy IE9300-NW-A= (or start on IE-9320-26S2C-A) when VRF-separated domains, TrustSec group policy – including TrustSec over PRP – or BGP/EVPN fabric participation enters the design; nothing else on this platform is license-gated in a way that blocks operation.
3. Stackable Or Single Chassis
Choose this stackable model when the fiber plant will outgrow 28 ports or when rings should survive a chassis failure via MRP over Stacking; a site that will never add a second unit can weigh IE-9310-26S2C-E and its higher standalone MTBF.
4. Same Hardware Rules As The -A
Power modules ship separately (two for A/B redundancy), copper GLC-T family SFPs stay off the combo ports and degrade PTP, and industrial-grade optics protect the -40°C to +75°C envelope – license tier changes none of this.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
License tier audit |
Verify no day-one need for VRF, TrustSec, BGP/EIGRP, MACsec-256, or fabric roles. |
Those are the only -A exclusives here; buying -E then upgrading immediately costs more than one -A order. |
|
Upgrade path on file |
Note IE9300-NW-A= as the perpetual in-place upgrade in the project record. |
A future segmentation project then orders a license, not a replacement switch. |
|
Power module pair |
Match module class to the site feed and order two for redundant A/B power. |
Both module slots are empty at purchase and the low-voltage DC and AC-DC families differ. |
|
Optics and combo ports |
Specify industrial-grade SFPs and keep GLC-TE/GLC-T/GLC-T-RGD off the order. |
Copper SFPs are unsupported on the dual-media ports and degrade PTP timing accuracy. |
|
Stack cabling |
Include CAB-STK-0.5M= or CAB-STK-1M= for every planned member beyond the first. |
StackWise and MRP over Stacking only function with the dedicated cables in place. |
|
Rack and media kit |
Pick the RM-RGD rack kit for the rack standard and add SD-IE-16GB= for SwapDrive. |
Rack kits are standard-specific, and zero-touch replacement depends on the optional SD card. |
