IE-3400H-16T-A Description
The IE-3400H-16T-A is the mid-density Gigabit model of the Cisco Catalyst IE3400 Heavy Duty Series, carrying 16 GE ports on M12 X-coded connectors in an IP66/IP67 and UL 50E Type 4X housing with the perpetual Network Advantage license. Built to be bolted onto machines, walls, and vehicle bodies with no cabinet, it concentrates twice the drops of the 8-port base while staying fanless and sealed against dust, water jets, and brief immersion. The switch runs the same IOS XE image as the IE3400 Rugged Series: Network Advantage contributes OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite, TrustSec SGT/SGACL, MACsec-256, and multicast routing, layered over an Essentials baseline of REP and MRP rings, PRP, HSR, DLR, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP (CIP), IEEE 1588 PTPv2, and IOx edge compute for Cyber Vision. Vehicle and railway approvals on the GE hardware, corrosion type-testing, a -40°C to +75°C span, and a 13,800 ft altitude ceiling qualify one part number for onboard, washdown, and outdoor structural duty.

Key Features
Sixteen GE drops share one IP66/IP67 Type 4X housing, halving the sealed switch count where camera clusters, door systems, and control devices gather past the 8-port mark.
M12 X-coded 8-pin connectors screw down on every port, holding full Gigabit links through vibration profiles that work RJ45 contacts loose on vehicles and heavy plant.
This SKU’s perpetual Advantage license carries OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite, and TrustSec SGT/SGACL, so a 16-device zone can be segmented and routed at its own mounting point with MACsec-256 guarding exposed uplinks.
PRP on ports Gig1/1-1/4, HSR-SAN, HSR-PRP Dual Redbox, DLR, REP, and PROFINET-MRP come from the Essentials baseline, so seamless redundancy needs no additional licensing at any tier.
UN ECE R10 and E-Mark automotive marks plus the EN50155:2021 railway set with EN45545-2 fire safety apply to this GE model, clearing it for train, tram, and specialty-vehicle installation.
IEC 60068-2-52 salt mist and 2-60 mixed gas corrosion testing joins the +60°C still-air rating and 13,800 ft ceiling, keeping coastal, chemical, and high-altitude installations inside specification.
Application Scenarios
Mounted at the center of packaging lines and process skids where sensors, drives, HMIs, and cameras exceed eight drops, aggregating the whole cluster into one sealed unit.
Installed through carriages to serve CCTV, passenger information, and door controllers, where EN50155 approval and 16 locking M12 ports cover a car’s full device complement.
Fitted to cranes, conveyor gantries, and intermodal yard equipment that stand in salt air and spray, backhauling PLCs and cameras without any climate-controlled housing.

- The IE-3400H-16T-A and IE-3400H-16T-E are the same sealed 16-port hardware split by license: the -A tier in this PID adds dynamic routing, VRF-lite, TrustSec SGT/SGACL, and MACsec-256, while the -E unit covers ring-and-VLAN duty and can adopt the full set later via the perpetual IE3400H-NW-A= upgrade.
- IE-3400H-24T-A extends the identical platform to 24 ports for about 7W more draw and 2.65 lb more weight at a lower MTBF, so it displaces this model only when a single mounting point genuinely serves more than 16 devices.
- For deciding which SKU to order, settle the feature tier first – day-one routing or TrustSec lands on an -A PID – then match density: 16 drops with advanced features is exactly this switch, budget-driven L2 sites take IE-3400H-16T-E, and only device counts past 16 justify IE-3400H-24T-A.
Selection Guide
1. Sixteen Drops Under One Seal
Zones with 9 to 16 endpoints at a single mounting point land here; the Heavy Duty line has no expansion bay, so a count that will pass 16 within the hardware’s life belongs on IE-3400H-24T-A from the first order.
2. Advantage Now Or Upgrade Later
Order this -A PID when VRF segmentation, dynamic routing, TrustSec, or MACsec-256 appear in the day-one design; a plain redundant-ring deployment starts cheaper on IE-3400H-16T-E and adds IE3400H-NW-A= only if those features actually arrive.
3. One Feed, Sized For 4.4A
The single Mini-Change input has no redundant partner, so the 9.6-60VDC source – PWR-IE160W-67-DC= or a vehicle circuit – must be dependable and rated for the 4.4A worst-case draw at 9.6V, with Molex cordsets ordered alongside.
4. Where DIN Rail Still Wins
A site that already provides a sealed cabinet gets more flexibility from the IE3400 Rugged Series: dual power inputs, SFP fiber uplinks, expansion modules, and hazardous-location listings, none of which the wall-mount Heavy Duty housing offers.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
DC feed and cordset |
Size the 9.6-60VDC source for 4.4A and order the Molex Mini-Change cordset (or PWR-IE160W-67-DC=). |
No supply or mating cordset ships with the switch, and generic wiring does not fit the Mini-Change input. |
|
Redundancy expectation |
Verify the design accepts a single power input. |
The Heavy Duty platform omits the dual redundant feeds of DIN rail IE3400 models. |
|
Sixteen X-coded runs |
Plan M12 X-coded 8-pin cordsets for every GE port before installation. |
Each of the 16 links needs the correct locking cable; D-coded FE leads do not mate. |
|
Console cable |
Put CAB-CONSOLE-M12= on the same order. |
Serial access for commissioning runs through the M12 A-coded console port only. |
|
SwapDrive media |
Add SD-IE-16GB if hot-swap field replacement is in the operations plan. |
Without the optional SD card a replacement unit cannot self-restore its configuration. |
|
Approval coverage |
Confirm vehicle/rail certificates against this GE SKU and note the absence of hazardous-location listings. |
FE (-FT) models carry no automotive/rail set, and no IE3400H is Class I Div 2 / Zone 2 certified. |
