IE-3400H-24T-A Description
The IE-3400H-24T-A is the highest-density model in the Cisco Catalyst IE3400 Heavy Duty Series, packing 24 Gigabit M12 X-coded ports into one IP66/IP67 and UL 50E Type 4X sealed unit with the perpetual Network Advantage license. Where most sealed switches top out at 8 or 16 drops, this 13.9-inch wall-mount chassis absorbs an entire zone's cameras, controllers, and operator stations at a mounting point that offers no cabinet and no climate control. Running the same IOS XE image as the IE3400 Rugged Series, its Advantage tier delivers OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite, TrustSec SGT/SGACL, MACsec-256, and multicast routing above the Essentials baseline of REP and MRP rings, PRP, HSR, DLR, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP (CIP), IEEE 1588 PTPv2, and IOx edge compute. Automotive and railway approvals on the GE hardware, IEC 60068 corrosion type-testing, the -40°C to +75°C span, and the 13,800 ft altitude ceiling carry the full port count into vehicles, washdown halls, and open-air structures.

Key Features
Twenty-four Gigabit drops eliminate the second and third sealed switch at dense mounting points, collapsing an entire machine hall zone or carriage backbone into a single IP66/IP67 unit.
Every port is an M12 X-coded 8-pin connector that screws home, so two dozen full-rate links stay connected through the sustained vibration of rail bogies, cranes, and stamping floors.
OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, PBR, VRF-lite, VRF-Aware SGT, TrustSec SGT/SGACL, and MACsec-256 are perpetual on this PID, turning the densest sealed node into a routed, policy-enforcing OT boundary.
PRP on Gig1/1-1/4, HSR-SAN, HSR-PRP Dual Redbox, DLR, REP, and PROFINET-MRP come with the Essentials baseline inside Advantage, covering seamless topologies at all 24 ports’ scale.
As a GE (-T) SKU it holds UN ECE R10, E-Mark, and the EN50155:2021 railway group with EN45545-2 fire safety – approvals its FE siblings and many competing 24-port units lack.
Even at 24 ports the fanless unit is rated -40°C to +75°C with airflow, +60°C in still air, 13,800 ft of altitude, and IEC 60068-2-52/-2-60 corrosion exposure, with type-testing at +85°C for 16 hours.
Application Scenarios
Running the length of a train car as its single EN50155-approved node, terminating CCTV, passenger information, traction monitoring, and door systems on one sealed 24-port chassis.
Anchoring stamping, bottling, and packaging zones where cameras, drives, HMIs, and quality stations push past sixteen drops at one washdown-exposed mounting position.
Serving container terminals, mine sites, and process yards that want fewer sealed boxes on structures, trading several small units for one high-density point with routed segmentation.

- All three GE Advantage models share the sealed housing depth, feature set, and scale tables, so the IE-3400H-24T-A justifies its extra 3 to 6 inches of width, roughly 7-19W of draw, and lower MTBF only through port count – it is the answer when one mounting point genuinely concentrates more than sixteen devices.
- Splitting a dense zone across two smaller units instead – IE-3400H-16T-A plus IE-3400H-8T-A – buys higher per-unit MTBF and placement flexibility at the cost of a second DC feed, a second mounting position, and more cordsets, a trade worth running for vibration-critical vehicles.
- For deciding which SKU to order, map physical drops per mounting point first: 17 or more lands on IE-3400H-24T-A, 9 to 16 on IE-3400H-16T-A, and 8 or fewer on IE-3400H-8T-A, since the fixed housings offer no expansion path between them.
Selection Guide
1. Past Sixteen Drops, One Position
This model exists for the mounting point that must terminate 17-24 endpoints itself; with no expansion bay anywhere in the Heavy Duty line, choosing it early beats retrofitting a second sealed unit onto a finished structure.
2. One Chassis Or Two Smaller Ones
Weigh a single 24-port node against a 16-plus-8 split: the single chassis needs one feed and one position but concentrates failure impact; the split roughly halves blast radius and raises per-unit MTBF while doubling power and cabling work.
3. Feed Sizing At Full Density
The single Mini-Change input must supply up to 5.1A at 9.6V; specify PWR-IE160W-67-DC= or an equivalently rated vehicle circuit, order the Molex cordsets with the switch, and accept that no redundant second input exists.
4. License And Platform Boundaries
This -A PID ships with routing, VRF, TrustSec, and MACsec-256 active; a cabinet-equipped site wanting fiber uplinks, dual feeds, expansion modules, or hazardous-location listings should evaluate the DIN rail IE3400 Rugged Series instead, since the Heavy Duty line trades those for its IP67 shell.
Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
DC circuit rating |
Provide a 9.6-60VDC source good for 5.1A worst case, with the Mini-Change cordset ordered. |
The densest IE3400H draws the most current, and no supply or cordset is included. |
|
Single-input reality |
Sign off the redundancy design around one power feed. |
There is no second redundant input on any Heavy Duty model. |
|
Twenty-four cable runs |
Budget and order X-coded 8-pin M12 cordsets for every populated port. |
Each Gigabit link requires the locking X-coded cable; nothing else mates. |
|
Console provisioning |
Add CAB-CONSOLE-M12= for the M12 A-coded console port. |
Commissioning and recovery need serial access that standard cables cannot provide. |
|
SwapDrive readiness |
Include SD-IE-16GB when field-replaceable operation is required. |
Zero-touch replacement only works if the optional SD card holds the configuration. |
|
Approval fit |
Match the GE-SKU vehicle/rail set to the project and confirm no hazardous-location need. |
FE models lack those approvals, and the whole series omits Class I Div 2 / Zone 2 listings. |
