IE-3400-8T2S-E Description
The IE-3400-8T2S-E is a Cisco Catalyst IE3400 Rugged Series industrial switch for DIN-rail cabinets that run PRP, HSR or DLR redundancy on Network Essentials. The switch pairs eight 10/100/1000 copper ports with two 100/1000 SFP uplinks and no PoE, accepts dual DC inputs from 9.6 to 60VDC and operates from -40°C to +70°C in a vented enclosure. Network Essentials routes between VLANs and over static routes only; OSPF, BGP, SGT/SGACL and MACsec-256 require Network Advantage.

Product Performance
Key Features
PRP, PTP over PRP, HSR-SAN, HSR-PRP Dual Redbox and DLR all come with Network Essentials, next to REP and PROFINET MRP rings. PRP runs as a single instance on ports Gig1/1 to Gig1/4, and while DLR, PRP or HSR is active the jumbo frame limit drops from 8996 to 2000 bytes.
The switch carries CIP EtherNet/IP and PROFINET traffic, keeps time with IEEE 1588 PTPv2 in the default and power profiles, and classifies GOOSE and MODBUS TCP/IP messages. One-to-one L2NAT translates addresses at Layer 2 and is supported on the uplink ports.
IOx hosts native Docker containers on the switch, and Cisco Cyber Vision and Secure Equipment Access are among the supported applications. IOx is part of Network Essentials and needs no license upgrade.
Ports can authenticate devices with 802.1X or MAC authentication bypass, and DHCP snooping, dynamic ARP inspection and IP source guard block spoofed addresses. Links leaving the cabinet can run MACsec-128, and the platform is certified to IEC 62443-4-2.
Seven non-PoE modules fit the expansion slot. An eight-port module such as IEM-3400-8S= brings the system to 18 Gigabit ports, while IEM-3300-16T= or IEM-3300-14T2S= reaches 26 but rules out SGT/SGACL if the switch later moves to Network Advantage.
The chassis meets IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 for substations, EN50155 and EN50121-4 for rail, and Class I Division 2 and Zone 2 for hazardous locations. The +75°C limit applies only in an enclosure with at least 200 LFM of forced airflow.
Application Scenarios
On a packaging line, drives, I/O blocks and the line controller sit in an EtherNet/IP Device Level Ring, and the switch joins that ring while passing CIP traffic up to the plant network over its SFP uplinks.
A trackside equipment cabinet holds signaling controllers and wayside sensors, and the switch links them into a REP ring that runs along the line inside a chassis rated to EN50155 and EN50121-4.
Pump station PLCs report flow and pressure to the utility SCADA system over MODBUS TCP, with the switch connecting them on copper and sending the traffic back to the treatment plant over fiber.

IE-3400-8T2S-E and IE-3400-8P2S-E share eight copper ports, two 100/1000 SFP uplinks and Network Essentials, but only IE-3400-8P2S-E powers its copper ports, with PoE/PoE+ from a 240W budget or 480W with a PoE expansion module. Cabinets with powered endpoints need that model from the start, because PoE modules fit only a PoE base and this data-only chassis cannot gain powered ports later. Designs that need OSPF, BGP, VRF-lite, SGT/SGACL or MACsec-256 must run Network Advantage: order IE-3400-8T2S-A, or add the perpetual IE3400-NW-A= license to an installed switch without changing hardware. IE-3300-8T2S-E has the same ports and license tier but runs only REP and MRP rings; it suits a cabinet only where PRP, HSR-SAN and DLR are not used.
Ordering Checklist
- DC power supply: Feed 9.6 to 60VDC to the DC inputs or add an IE DIN rail supply. With IEM-3400-8S= the load reaches 63W, above the 50W PWR-IE50W-AC= but within the 65W PWR-IE65W-PC-AC=.
- Supply for hazardous locations: Class I Div 2 or Zone 2 cabinets need a supply without the -L suffix. The -L supplies are IP20 rated and not certified for hazardous locations or smart grid sites.
- Expansion module: Choose from IEM-3400-8T=, IEM-3400-8S=, IEM-3300-8T=, IEM-3300-8S=, IEM-3300-16T=, IEM-3300-6T2S= or IEM-3300-14T2S=. PoE modules plug only into PoE base switches and will not fit this switch.
- SD card: Add SD-IE-16GB= when SwapDrive configuration backup and switch replacement are planned. The SD card is optional and is not shipped with the switch by default.
- Catalyst Center license: Add IE3400-DNA-E or its 3, 5 or 7-year term when Catalyst Center manages the switch. IE3400-DNA-A also needs IE3400-NW-A=, because Catalyst Center Advantage requires Network Advantage on the switch.
- SFP temperature grade: Order industrial optics such as GLC-SX-MM-RGD= or GLC-LX-SM-RGD= for cabinets near the temperature limits. Commercial or extended-temperature SFPs force the switch to be derated.
- 19-inch rack kit: Add STK-RACK-DINRAIL= when the switch goes into a 19-inch rack instead of a cabinet DIN rail. The mount kit is a separate line item.
