IE-3400-8P2S-A Description
The IE-3400-8P2S-A is a Cisco Catalyst IE3400 Rugged Series advanced modular industrial PoE switch that combines 8 Gigabit PoE/PoE+ copper downlinks and 2 Gigabit SFP uplinks with the deepest security and redundancy set of Cisco's compact DIN rail line, ordered at the perpetual Network Advantage tier. Its 240W base PoE budget grows to 480W with a PoE expansion module, and the -A license activates SGT/SGACL segmentation with Cisco TrustSec, VRF-lite, VRF-Aware SGT, OSPF/BGP/EIGRP routing, MACsec-256, and PIM multicast routing on top of an Essentials baseline that already includes PRP, HSR-SAN, HSR-PRP Dual Redbox, DLR, REP and MRP rings, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP (CIP), dual-profile IEEE 1588 PTPv2, and IOx edge compute. Fanless -40°C to +70°C vented operation, dual 9.6-60VDC feeds, and substation, rail, marine, and Class I Div 2 approvals aim this powered node at plants and infrastructure where segmentation policy has to reach the machine edge.

Key Features
SGT/SGACL with Cisco TrustSec lets security policy follow devices on the powered edge – a capability of the -A license that stays intact only when expansion uses IEM-3400 modules rather than IEM-3300 parts.
PRP on base ports Gig1/1-1/4, HSR-SAN, HSR-PRP Dual Redbox, and DLR join REP and MRP in the baseline, covering the seamless-failover architectures that process and utility networks specify.
The PoE system doubles from 240W to 480W with a PoE module, and IEM-3300-4MU= adds four 2.5G ports at 802.3bt Type 4 for the heaviest endpoints – all behind the same base switch.
IEEE 1588 PTPv2 runs in Default and Power Profile on this GE-uplink platform, keeping C37.238 utility timing available alongside PoE, unlike the 10G-uplink IE3300 bases.
OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite, and MACsec-256 terminate routed segments and encrypt exposed uplinks at the cabinet, with L2NAT additionally supported on the uplink ports of this platform.
IEC 62443-4-1/-4-2, IEEE 1613, IEC 61850-3, EN50155 rail, DNV marine, NEMA TS 2, and Class I Div 2 approvals qualify the same PID for substations, rolling-stock adjacency, vessels, and process areas.
Application Scenarios
Deployed at production cells where each device class – controllers, HMIs, cameras, tools – carries its own SGT so TrustSec policy limits lateral movement without re-cabling the cell.
Installed in PRP or HSR topologies at water, energy, and chemical sites where a single lost frame matters and powered instruments hang off the same node.
Positioned in substation and yard cabinets to power IP cameras and wireless links while distributing PTP Power Profile timing and MACsec-256-protected uplinks.

- IE-3400-8P2S-A and IE-3400-8P2S-E are one 240W/480W powered platform separated by license: TrustSec segmentation, dynamic routing, VRF-lite, PIM multicast, and MACsec-256 belong to this -A PID, while the -E covers Layer 2 powered duty and can adopt the full set later through the perpetual IE3400-NW-A= in-place upgrade.
- Against IE-3400-8T2S-A the license content is identical and the decision is physical: the 8T2S drops all PoE circuitry for an 11W lower draw and higher MTBF, so it takes the order whenever the cabinet’s endpoints power themselves.
- For deciding which SKU to order, confirm powered endpoints first (they force the 8P2S hardware), then license timing: day-one segmentation or routing lands on IE-3400-8P2S-A, and upstream-routed L2 designs can start on IE-3400-8P2S-E without stranding the hardware.
Selection Guide
1. Advantage Where Policy Reaches The Edge
Order this -A PID when TrustSec SGTs, VRF termination, routed adjacencies, or MACsec-256 are in the deployment design; if those live upstream today, IE-3400-8P2S-E runs the same powered edge and IE3400-NW-A= upgrades it in place when the design moves.
2. Keep SGT Capability In Module Choices
Expansion with IEM-3400 modules preserves SGT/SGACL; mixing an IEM-3300 module onto this base disables that segmentation on the switch, so a TrustSec site should standardize on IEM-3400-8P= for powered growth.
3. Budget Tiers And The Type 4 Path
Plan 240W for the base estate and 480W with a PoE module; endpoints above Type 3 need the IEM-3300-4MU= path – which trades away SGT and carries no PTP on its ports – or a different platform choice.
4. When The 9300 Line Fits Better
This platform peaks at GE uplinks; a powered edge that must backhaul at 10G belongs on the IE3300 10G bases (at the cost of PTP Power Profile and TrustSec) rather than stretching this SKU.

Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
PoE-class supply |
Order a PoE-capable DIN supply sized for 47W switch draw plus the planned budget (240W or 480W path). |
An undersized supply sheds PoE load at peak draw, appearing as endpoint reboots. |
|
54V for PoE+ |
Wire 54VDC input when any port must deliver PoE+ class power. |
A 48V feed caps ports at basic PoE and starves PoE+ endpoints. |
|
Module family discipline |
Use IEM-3400 modules when SGT/SGACL is part of the design; IEM-3300 modules disable it on the base. |
A cheaper module silently removes the segmentation the -A license was bought for. |
|
Jumbo frame planning |
Note the 2000-byte jumbo limit when ERSPAN, DLR, PRP, HSR, or SGT are enabled. |
Applications tuned for 8996-byte frames break quietly once those features activate. |
|
Classified-area parts |
Avoid -L supplies in Class I Div 2 / Zone 2 areas and plan the required enclosure. |
IP20 uncertified supplies fail acceptance in classified zones. |
|
SD card for SwapDrive |
Add SD-IE-16GB= when zero-touch field replacement is planned. |
The card is optional and not shipped by default. |
