IE-9320-24P4X-E Description

The IE-9320-24P4X-E is the heavyweight PoE model of the Cisco Catalyst IE9300 Rugged Series: 24 Gigabit PoE+ copper downlinks backed by a module-driven budget that reaches 720W with dual 400W units - enough to run every port at full 802.3at power simultaneously - plus 4 SFP+ uplinks at 1G or 10G, in a fanless, stackable 1RU rack chassis with the Network Essentials license. Perpetual PoE keeps endpoints powered through reloads and Fast PoE restores power before the OS boots, while 95.23 Mpps and 128 Gbps of switching move dense camera traffic onto 10G backhaul. Essentials carries the working feature set - OSPF with 1,000 routes, RIP, PBR, REP and MRP rings with MRP over Stacking, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP (CIP), PTP Power Profile with IEC 61850-9-3, MACsec-128, 802.1X, and IOx - and the perpetual IE9300-NW-A= upgrade adds VRF, TrustSec, BGP-class routing, and MACsec-256 whenever segmentation arrives. Substation, ITS, railway, and hazardous-location approvals complete the industrial spec.

Key Features

No Budget Arithmetic At Full Load

With dual 400W modules the 720W pool covers all 24 downlinks drawing complete 802.3at power at once, removing the oversubscription math that constrains the 480W GE-uplink sibling.

Ten-Gig Drain For Camera Walls

Four SFP+ uplinks at 1G or 10G and 95.23 Mpps of forwarding keep two dozen high-bitrate cameras or access points from queuing at the backhaul, with stack ports joining up to four chassis.

Endpoints Outlive The Switch OS

Perpetual PoE maintains device power straight through switch reloads and Fast PoE re-energizes ports before IOS XE finishes booting, so surveillance and safety endpoints skip maintenance blackouts.

Working Set At The Base Tier

OSPF (1,000 routes), OSPFv3, RIP, PBR, REP and MRP rings with stack-wide MRP, PROFINET, CIP, GOOSE and SCADA classification, and IOx all ship in this -E license before any upgrade.

Powered Racks In Regulated Rooms

IEC 61850-3, IEEE 1613, NEMA TS2:2021, EN 50121-4 railway EMC, and Class I Div 2 / Zone 2 hazardous-location approvals put high-density PoE where enterprise switches are disqualified.

Isolated Modules, Swappable Live

The two power slots take field-replaceable modules with electrically isolated outputs, spanning 18-75V DC plants and 85-264V AC / 88-300V DC feeds for true A/B redundancy.

Application Scenarios

High-Bitrate Surveillance Estates

Powering full walls of 4K PTZ cameras at yards, terminals, and perimeters where per-port draw runs high and the 10G uplinks carry the aggregate stream to recording infrastructure.

Wireless-Dense Industrial Halls

Feeding Wi-Fi access points, location beacons, and connected tools across large production and logistics floors, stacking chassis as radio counts grow past one switch.

Smart Intersection Mega-Cabinets

Serving major ITS junctions under NEMA TS2 where cameras, signal controllers, and roadside units concentrate and the corridor backbone has moved to 10G fiber.

  • The IE-9320-24P4X-E outranks IE-9320-24P4S-E on both axes that matter for powered estates – a 720W ceiling against 480W and 10G-capable uplinks against fixed GE – at identical MTBF, so the smaller sibling wins only when the endpoint wattage and backhaul genuinely stay modest.
  • IE-9320-24T4X-E shares this model’s 10G uplinks and 95.23 Mpps but drops PoE entirely, returning the series-best 651,580-hour MTBF and lowest draw for racks of self-powered equipment.
  • For deciding which SKU to order, project the powered-device roadmap: estates trending past 480W or toward 10G backhaul belong on the IE-9320-24P4X-E from the start, stable sub-480W GE sites save with IE-9320-24P4S-E, and PoE-free racks take IE-9320-24T4X-E for reliability.

Selection Guide

1. Buy The Ceiling You Will Reach

Camera walls refresh toward higher-draw models; if the three-year endpoint plan approaches 480W, this model’s 720W pool with dual 400W modules absorbs the growth that would force a chassis swap on the GE-uplink sibling.

2. Dual 400W Is The Whole Story

The 720W figure exists only with two 400W modules that refuse load-sharing with 150W/250W units – order both up front, because a mixed or single-module configuration caps the budget at 320W or less.

3. Uplink Headroom Costs Less Now

The SFP+ ports run GE optics today and 10G when the ring upgrades; choosing IE-9320-24P4S-E to save on day one locks the node at Gigabit backhaul permanently.

4. Model Limits Before License Limits

HSR/PRP and GNSS/IRIG-B never arrive on 24P4X hardware regardless of tier, while VRF, TrustSec, BGP-class routing, and MACsec-256 unlock in place later via IE9300-NW-A= – keep the two boundaries separate in the design review.

PoE Power Planning

Perpetual PoE holds power through reloads; Fast PoE restores power before OS boot

Powered-device count

Up to 24 PDs; verify per-port class draw when running mixed module configurations below 720W

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

Dual 400W modules

Put two PWR-RGD-AC-DC-400= units on the order when the design counts on 720W.

Any other module mix caps the budget at 370W or below, and slots ship empty.

Endpoint wattage forecast

Compare the summed PD classes against the module ladder for the chosen configuration.

The ladder, not the port count, determines how many devices actually power up.

10G optic selection

Specify SR/LR/ER SFP+ optics in -I/-X industrial grades for the uplinks.

Commercial optics derate the -40°C to +75°C envelope in field cabinets.

Stack cabling

Add CAB-STK-0.5M= / CAB-STK-1M= for each additional planned member.

StackWise and stack-wide MRP need the dedicated cables from day one.

Redundancy protocol fit

Confirm REP/MRP satisfies the spec, since HSR/PRP is unavailable on this model.

Seamless-redundancy requirements force a 26S2C or 22S2C4X model instead.

Rack kit and SD card

Match the RM-RGD kit to the rack standard and add SD-IE-16GB= for SwapDrive.

Rack fit and zero-touch replacement both ride on separately ordered parts.
