IE-3300-8U2X-E Description
The IE-3300-8U2X-E brings the Catalyst IE3300 line's highest power class to the Network Essentials tier: a fanless modular DIN rail switch whose 8 Gigabit copper downlinks negotiate 4PPoE (802.3bt Type 3) under a system budget that reaches 480W with an expansion module, all backhauled over 2x 1G/10G SFP+ uplinks. Its perpetual Essentials license concentrates on the Layer 2 duties of a powered industrial edge - REP and Fast REP rings, MRP, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP (CIP), IGMP snooping for camera multicast, L2NAT on downlinks, MACsec-128, and IOx edge compute - while heavy routing and segmentation stay upstream, and the perpetual IE3300-NW-A= license can raise the installed unit to the full Advantage set whenever those duties move down. Dual 9.6-60VDC feeds, PTP Default Profile on this 10G base, a -40°C to +70°C vented envelope, and substation, rail, and Class I Div 2 approvals complete a high-power access node for cost-controlled OT builds.

Key Features
Type 3 endpoints – heated PTZ housings, Wi-Fi 6 access points, high-draw sensors – get their power here while the license spend stays at the Essentials tier appropriate for a Layer 2 edge.
IGMP snooping and QoS in the base license keep multicast video from powered cameras flowing cleanly to upstream routers, which is the common consumption model when routing lives at distribution.
REP, Fast REP with zero-touch provisioning, and PROFINET-MRP come standard, closing resilient loops between powered cabinets without any license upgrade.
IE3300-NW-A= converts this unit in place to Network Advantage – OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, VRF-lite, PIM multicast, MACsec-256 – so the 480W hardware never has to be repurchased to gain routing.
This base runs PTP Default Profile only, omits L2NAT on the uplink pair, and the Type 4 path via IEM-3300-4MU= carries no PTP; plan timing and translation placement accordingly.
IEC 62443, IEEE 1613/IEC 61850-3, EN50121/EN50155 rail, NEMA TS 2, DNV marine, and Class I Div 2 approvals let one PID power edges in plants, corridors, substup yards, and vessels.
Application Scenarios
Deployed in surveillance cabinets whose bt-class cameras stream to upstream recorders through IGMP-snooped Layer 2 paths, with the 10G uplinks absorbing the aggregate video load.
Placed as REP or MRP ring members that also power access points and sensors, keeping ring transport and endpoint power in one DIN unit per cabinet.
Installed across distribution centers to feed 802.3bt access points at ceiling height while the enterprise handles routing and segmentation at the aggregation layer.

- IE-3300-8U2X-E and IE-3300-8U2X-A are one hardware platform with two price points: the -A front-loads dynamic routing, VRF-lite, PIM multicast, and MACsec-256, while this -E covers the same 480W powered edge for Layer 2 designs and takes the perpetual IE3300-NW-A= upgrade in place when routing responsibilities arrive.
- IE-3300-8T2X-E shares this PID’s license tier and 10G uplinks but carries no PoE circuitry at 28W draw, so the powered-endpoint list is the entire distinction – remove the cameras and access points and the cheaper 8T2X-E does the identical transport job.
- For deciding which SKU to order, screen power first (bt endpoints require the 8U2X hardware), then license timing: day-one routing or 256-bit MACsec justifies IE-3300-8U2X-A, while upstream-routed designs start on IE-3300-8U2X-E and defer the difference.
Selection Guide
1. The Essentials Fit For Powered Edges
When segmentation, dynamic routing, and multicast routing terminate at distribution and the cabinet’s role is powering endpoints and moving Layer 2 traffic fast, this license tier is the whole requirement – the 480W and 10G hardware are identical across the pair.
2. Upgrade Triggers, Not Hardware Swaps
Watch for the design moments that demand OSPF/BGP at the cabinet, VRF-lite termination, PIM routing, or MACsec-256 on exposed runs; each is delivered by IE3300-NW-A= on the installed base, so plan the license line rather than a forklift.
3. Type 4 And Timing Placement
Endpoints above Type 3 need the IEM-3300-4MU= module path (Type 4 on four 2.5G ports, no PTP on the module), and any C37.238 Power Profile requirement moves the whole design to GE-uplink IE3300 bases.
4. Data-Only Cabinets Step Down
A cabinet with no powered devices takes IE-3300-8T2X-E at lower draw and cost; buying 480W of PoE capability for a data-only role wastes both the supply class and the PID premium.

Ordering Checklist
|
Check Item |
What to Confirm |
Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
|
Full-budget supply |
Order PWR-IE480W-PCAC-L= (or an adequate certified supply) when the 480W system budget will be used. |
Undersized supplies shed PoE load at peak draw, appearing as endpoint reboots in the field. |
|
54V for bt classes |
Wire 54VDC input for PoE+ and 4PPoE operation. |
A 48V feed limits ports to basic PoE and starves bt endpoints. |
|
License PID on upgrades |
Use IE3300-NW-A= when raising an installed unit to Network Advantage. |
Ordering a new -A switch instead of the license doubles hardware spend for a feature change. |
|
Type 4 module path |
Add IEM-3300-4MU= for 802.3bt Type 4 endpoints and keep timing devices off its ports. |
Type 4 exists only on the 4MU ports, and the module does not support PTP. |
|
Corrosion-test status |
Note pending salt-fog and mixed-gas approvals on 10G variants for corrosive-site specs. |
A specification requiring those certificates today may need GE-uplink bases. |
|
Classified-area parts |
Avoid -L supplies in Class I Div 2 / Zone 2 areas and plan the required enclosure. |
IP20 uncertified supplies fail acceptance in classified zones. |
