IE-3300-8T2X-A Description

The IE-3300-8T2X-A is a Cisco Catalyst IE3300 Rugged Series modular industrial switch that pairs 8 Gigabit copper downlinks with 2x 1G/10G SFP+ uplinks and ships with the perpetual Network Advantage license, making it the routed high-bandwidth variant of the fanless DIN rail line. The Advantage tier brings OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite segmentation, MACsec-256, and IP multicast routing to a 10G-uplinked access node, on top of the IOS XE baseline of REP and MRP rings, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP (CIP), IOx edge compute, and IEEE 1588 PTPv2 - noting that this 10G base runs PTP in Default Profile only and does not extend L2NAT to its uplink ports. One IEM-3300 expansion bay grows the system to 24 GE ports plus the two 10G uplinks, while dual 9.6-60VDC feeds, a -40°C to +70°C vented range, and substation, rail, and Class I Div 2 approvals put the bandwidth where industrial plants and yards actually need it.

Key Features

Ten-Gig Uplinks On A DIN Rail

The two SFP+ slots run at 1G or 10G, so aggregated camera, cell, and telemetry traffic leaves the cabinet at backbone speed instead of queuing behind Gigabit uplinks.

Routed Advantage At 10G

OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, PBR, and VRF-lite ship in the perpetual -A license, letting this node originate routed segments and advertise them upstream across its 10G links rather than bridging everything to a core.

Default-Profile Timing Boundary

As a 10G-uplink base the switch supports IEEE 1588 PTPv2 Default Profile only; designs built on the C37.238 Power Profile must use the GE-uplink IE3300 bases, so bandwidth and utility timing are an explicit trade on this PID.

Uplink NAT Exclusion

L2NAT works on this platform but not on the 10G uplink ports, which matters when machine-IP translation is expected at the cabinet boundary – plan translation on downlinks or elsewhere in the path.

Growth Without A Forklift

The IEM-3300 bay accepts copper and fiber data modules up to 16 ports, taking the system to 24 GE ports under the same two 10G uplinks as density arrives.

MACsec-256 Across The Yard

Advantage-tier 256-bit MACsec encrypts the exposed 10G runs between buildings or down a corridor, one tier above the MACsec-128 available to Essentials units.

Application Scenarios

Plant Backbone Feeders

Positioned where several machine cells converge, absorbing their Gigabit traffic on copper and handing consolidated flows to the plant core across dual 10G fiber uplinks.

High-Density Video Aggregation

Deployed at surveillance hubs where dozens of camera streams from downstream switches transit the cabinet, with 10G uplinks removing the bottleneck that GE-uplink models would impose.

Routed OT Distribution Nodes

Installed as the segmentation point of an industrial zone, terminating VRF-lite instances for process, safety, and enterprise traffic and routing them upstream with OSPF or BGP.

  • IE-3300-8T2X-A and IE-3300-8T2X-E are the same 10G-uplink hardware split purely by license: the -A carries OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, VRF-lite, PIM multicast, and MACsec-256, while the -E stops at static and inter-VLAN routing with MACsec-128, so the feature list at deployment day decides the suffix.
  • A design that starts on the -E side is not locked out: the perpetual IE3300-NW-A= upgrade license brings an installed IE-3300-8T2X-E up to this SKU’s feature set in place, which makes over-buying the -A defensible only when routing or 256-bit encryption is needed immediately.
  • IE-3300-8U2X-A shares this PID’s 10G uplinks and Advantage license but adds 802.3bt Type 3 power under a 480W ceiling at higher draw and cost, so powered endpoints at the cabinet are the only reason to step from IE-3300-8T2X-A to the 8U2X.

Selection Guide

1. Buy -A When Routing Lands On Day One

Deployments that terminate VRF-lite segments, run routing adjacencies, or must encrypt uplinks at MACsec-256 from the start belong on this -A PID; a switch that will spend its first years as a Layer 2 ring member does the same work as IE-3300-8T2X-E and can take IE3300-NW-A= later.

2. Check The Timing Requirement First

This 10G base supports PTP Default Profile only; a substation or wide-area design that mandates IEEE C37.238 Power Profile cannot use any 10G-uplink IE3300 and should be planned on the GE-uplink bases instead.

3. PoE Moves The Order To 8U2X

Nothing on this PID powers endpoints; when the same cabinet must also drive bt-class access points or cameras, IE-3300-8U2X-A provides the identical 10G uplinks with a 480W PoE system.

4. Plan L2NAT Placement Early

Machine-IP translation runs on downlink ports but not on the 10G uplinks of this base, so architectures that translate at the cabinet boundary need the NAT hop placed before traffic reaches the uplink pair.

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

External supply pairing

Order a 50W-class DIN supply (PWR-IE50W-AC=) for this 28W non-PoE base plus any module.

The switch ships without a supply; commissioning stalls without one on the same order.

10G optic plan

Select SFP+ optics per run (SR/LR/ER/ZR, BX, twinax) and prefer -I industrial grades in harsh cabinets.

COM/EXT optics derate the operating range, and SFP-10G-ZR-I= itself derates the switch by 6°C.

Corrosion-test status

Note that salt-fog and mixed-gas approvals are pending on 10G variants when specifying corrosive sites.

A coastal or chemical-plant spec that requires those certificates may need the GE-uplink bases today.

Module width

Allow 2-3 inches of extra DIN width for the chosen IEM-3300 module.

An unplanned width increase can miss the enclosure cutout at install.

SD card for SwapDrive

Add SD-IE-16GB= when zero-touch field replacement is planned.

The card is optional and not shipped by default.

Classified-area parts

Keep -L supplies out of Class I Div 2 / Zone 2 cabinets and plan the required enclosure.

IP20 uncertified supplies fail acceptance in classified zones.
