IE-3300-8U2X-A Description

The IE-3300-8U2X-A is the high-power flagship of the Cisco Catalyst IE3300 Rugged Series: a modular fanless DIN rail switch whose 8 Gigabit copper downlinks deliver 4PPoE (802.3bt Type 3) beneath 2x 1G/10G SFP+ uplinks, ordered with the perpetual Network Advantage license. Its PoE system scales to 480W with an expansion module - up to 24 PoE/PoE+ ports, eight Type 3 ports, or four Type 4 ports via the IEM-3300-4MU 2.5G module - while the Advantage tier supplies OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, VRF-lite segmentation, MACsec-256, and PIM multicast routing over the IOS XE baseline of REP/MRP rings, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP (CIP), and IOx edge compute. As a 10G base it runs IEEE 1588 PTPv2 in Default Profile and excludes L2NAT from the uplink pair, and its dual 9.6-60VDC feeds, -40°C to +70°C vented envelope, and substation, rail, and Class I Div 2 approvals aim it at powered high-bandwidth edges in plants, corridors, and yards.

Key Features

Type 3 Power On Every Downlink

All eight copper ports negotiate 802.3bt Type 3, so heated cameras, Wi-Fi 6 access points, and high-draw sensors connect directly without injectors or a second power-distribution layer.

480W System Ceiling

With a PoE expansion module the system budget reaches 480W – enough for a full field of powered endpoints – and IEM-3300-4MU= converts part of it into four 2.5G ports at Type 4 for the heaviest devices.

Routed Power-Dense Edge

The Advantage license terminates VRF-lite segments, runs OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, and routes PIM multicast at the cabinet, which suits camera estates whose streams are multicast-routed rather than trunked.

Backbone-Speed Backhaul

Dual 1G/10G SFP+ uplinks move the aggregate of a powered edge – video, telemetry, wireless – without the uplink congestion a GE-only PoE switch would create.

Boundaries Of The 10G Base

PTP runs in Default Profile only, L2NAT skips the uplink pair, and the 4MU module carries no PTP; utility timing designs on C37.238 belong on GE-uplink IE3300 bases instead.

Hardened And Certified Everywhere

Fanless -40°C to +70°C vented operation, dual 9.6-60VDC feeds, IEC 62443, IEEE 1613/IEC 61850-3, EN50121/EN50155 rail, NEMA TS 2, DNV marine, and Class I Div 2 approvals cover regulated sites with one PID.

Application Scenarios

Wi-Fi 6 Coverage Fields

Deployed where industrial wireless density is rising, powering 802.3bt access points across a production hall while their combined backhaul rides the 10G uplinks.

Multicast Video Hubs

Installed at surveillance aggregation cabinets whose high-power PTZ cameras stream multicast video that the switch routes with PIM toward recording and monitoring networks.

Smart Intersection Nodes

Positioned in ITS cabinets that power radar, lidar, and camera arrays at bt power classes and hand corridor traffic upstream at 10G.

  • IE-3300-8U2X-A and IE-3300-8U2X-E share every watt and port; the -A suffix buys dynamic routing, VRF-lite, PIM multicast, and MACsec-256 on day one, and a fleet standardized on the -E can reach the same feature set later through the perpetual IE3300-NW-A= in-place upgrade.
  • Against IE-3300-8T2X-A the question is purely whether the cabinet powers devices: the 8T2X keeps the same 10G uplinks and Advantage license at 28W draw and lower cost but has no PoE circuitry, so any bt-class or PoE+ endpoint list forces the IE-3300-8U2X-A.
  • For deciding which SKU to order, fix the power class first (bt endpoints demand this 8U2X hardware), then the license: immediate routing or 256-bit encryption points to IE-3300-8U2X-A, while an L2-only powered edge starts cheaper on IE-3300-8U2X-E without stranding hardware.

Selection Guide

1. When The Powered Edge Also Routes

Camera and wireless estates whose segmentation, multicast routing, or encrypted uplinks terminate at the cabinet use exactly what this -A license carries; if those functions live upstream, the same hardware at Essentials pricing does the job until IE3300-NW-A= is needed.

2. Power Class Before Port Count

Match endpoints to the power tiers: PoE+ estates under 360W fit IE-3300-8P2S-A at GE uplinks, while bt Type 3 devices or a 480W ceiling require this 8U2X base – and Type 4 devices additionally require the IEM-3300-4MU= module path.

3. Timing Requirements Screen The Base

This 10G base runs PTP Default Profile only; a C37.238 Power Profile design cannot be fixed by license or module choice and belongs on the GE-uplink IE3300 models.

4. Supply Sizing At 480W

Delivering the full system budget means the external supply covers 42W of switch draw plus 480W of PoE; that arithmetic lands on PWR-IE480W-PCAC-L= or dual supplies, and Class I Div 2 sites must avoid the uncertified -L units.

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

Full-budget supply

Order PWR-IE480W-PCAC-L= (or an adequate certified supply) when the 480W system budget will be used.

Undersized supplies shed PoE load at peak draw, appearing as endpoint reboots in the field.

54V for bt classes

Wire 54VDC input for PoE+ and 4PPoE operation.

A 48V feed limits ports to basic PoE and starves bt endpoints.

Type 4 module path

Add IEM-3300-4MU= when any endpoint needs 802.3bt Type 4, and keep timing devices off its ports.

Type 4 exists only on the 4MU ports, and the module does not support PTP.

PoE module compatibility

Choose PoE modules (8P/16P/4MU) for powered growth and allow the added DIN width.

Data modules never raise the budget; width surprises miss enclosure cutouts.

Corrosion-test status

Note pending salt-fog and mixed-gas approvals on 10G variants for corrosive-site specs.

A specification requiring those certificates today may need GE-uplink bases.

Classified-area parts

Avoid -L supplies in Class I Div 2 / Zone 2 areas and plan the required enclosure.

IP20 uncertified supplies fail acceptance in classified zones.

Questions & Answers

  • What is Cisco IE-3300-8U2X-A used for?

Cisco IE-3300-8U2X-A is used for industrial networks that need 8 Gigabit copper PoE-capable access ports, 2 10G SFP+ uplinks, modular expansion, and Network Advantage licensing. It is a strong fit for high-bandwidth industrial edge cabinets.
  • Does IE-3300-8U2X-A support high-power PoE?

Yes. IE-3300-8U2X-A is the IE3300 10G-uplink PoE model and supports up to a 480W PoE budget in the supported system design. It is suitable for power-hungry industrial cameras, wireless access points, and other powered field devices.
  • What is the difference between IE-3300-8U2X-A and IE-3300-8U2X-E?

The hardware profile is the same, but IE-3300-8U2X-A ships with Network Advantage while IE-3300-8U2X-E ships with Network Essentials. Choose the A model when advanced routing, segmentation, or policy features are part of the industrial design.
  • Why does IE-3300-8U2X-A have 10G uplinks?

The 2 10G SFP+ uplinks help prevent the industrial access switch from becoming a bottleneck when cameras, Wi-Fi 6 access points, or multiple machine networks aggregate into the same cabinet. They are useful when 1G uplinks are too limiting.
  • Can IE-3300-8U2X-A be expanded beyond 10 ports?

Yes. IE-3300-8U2X-A can be expanded with compatible IE3300 modules, allowing the system to grow beyond the base 8 copper ports and 2 10G uplinks. Expansion should be planned around PoE budget, media type, and cabinet width.
  • Is IE-3300-8U2X-A better than IE-3400-8P2S-E?

IE-3300-8U2X-A is better when the design needs 10G SFP+ uplinks, higher-power PoE options, and Network Advantage. IE-3400-8P2S-E is better when 1G SFP uplinks and Network Essentials are enough.
  • What power input should be checked for IE-3300-8U2X-A?

Check the DC power source and PoE requirements carefully. Cisco notes redundant DC input and higher voltage requirements for PoE+ or 4PPoE operation, so the power supply must be sized for both switch operation and endpoint load.
  • When is IE-3300-8U2X-A more than the site needs?

IE-3300-8U2X-A may be more than the site needs when the network only requires data-only 1G access and no 10G uplinks. For simpler cabinets, IE-3400-8T2S-A may be enough; for fixed 24-port rackmount density, review the IE9320 models.
