IE-3300-8T2X-E Description

The IE-3300-8T2X-E is the Network Essentials member of Cisco's 10G-uplink Catalyst IE3300 line, a fanless modular DIN rail switch built around 8 Gigabit copper downlinks and 2x 1G/10G SFP+ uplinks for industrial sites that need backbone-speed backhaul under a Layer 2 operating model. Its perpetual Essentials license covers the working set of an OT access node - REP and Fast REP rings, MRP, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP (CIP), L2NAT for machine-IP reuse (on downlink ports; the 10G uplinks are excluded), MACsec-128, QoS, IGMP snooping, and IOx edge compute for Cyber Vision - while IEEE 1588 PTPv2 runs in Default Profile on this 10G base. A single IEM-3300 bay expands the system to 24 GE ports beneath the same 10G uplinks, dual 9.6-60VDC feeds and a -40°C to +70°C vented envelope handle cabinet reality, and the perpetual IE3300-NW-A= license can raise an installed unit to the full Network Advantage feature set without touching the hardware.

Key Features

L2 Backbone Feeder Economics

The Essentials license keeps a 10G-uplinked cabinet on ring-and-VLAN operations at the lower license cost, which fits sites where routing terminates upstream and the cabinet’s job is fast, resilient transport.

Ring Protocols Included

REP, Fast REP with zero-touch provisioning, and PROFINET-MRP ship in the base license, so resilient ring topologies between cabinets need no license step-up on this PID.

Machine-IP Reuse With L2NAT

1:1 Layer 2 NAT lets serially built machines keep duplicate internal addressing behind each switch; on this 10G base the translation applies to downlink ports, with the SFP+ uplinks excluded.

In-Place Path To Advantage

The perpetual IE3300-NW-A= upgrade license converts an installed IE-3300-8T2X-E to the full Advantage feature set – routing protocols, VRF-lite, MACsec-256, multicast routing – without hardware replacement or downtime for a swap.

Timing Scope Of The 10G Base

IEEE 1588 PTPv2 runs in Default Profile on 10G-uplink IE3300 bases; manufacturing synchronization is covered, while C37.238 Power Profile designs belong on the GE-uplink models.

Industrial Envelope And Approvals

Fanless -40°C to +70°C vented operation, dual 9.6-60VDC feeds, IEC 62443, substation, rail, and Class I Div 2 approvals carry the unit across plants, corridors, and yards.

Application Scenarios

Resilient Ring Members

Placed as a node in a REP or MRP ring spanning several cabinets, forwarding ring traffic at 10G between neighbors while its eight copper ports serve the local machine group.

PROFINET Cell Backhaul

Deployed inside PROFINET-based production cells whose controllers and I/O stay in Layer 2 domains, with the 10G uplinks carrying cell traffic to a routed distribution layer elsewhere.

Duplicated Machine Rollouts

Installed with serially built OEM machines that ship identical internal IP plans, using L2NAT on the downlinks so each copy joins the plant network without re-addressing.

  • Between IE-3300-8T2X-E and IE-3300-8T2X-A nothing changes physically – the split is what the license unlocks: dynamic routing, VRF-lite, PIM multicast, and MACsec-256 exist only on the -A side, so a cabinet that must originate routed segments or encrypt at 256-bit needs the -A PID or an upgraded -E.
  • The upgrade direction is the buyer’s safety valve: IE3300-NW-A= is a perpetual in-place license, so starting on IE-3300-8T2X-E does not strand the hardware when routing arrives later – the cost decision is timing, not capability lock-in.
  • IE-3300-8U2X-E keeps this PID’s license tier and 10G uplinks but adds 802.3bt Type 3 power with a 480W ceiling at 42W draw, so the only reason to move from IE-3300-8T2X-E to the 8U2X-E is powered endpoints hanging off the same cabinet.

Selection Guide

1. Where Essentials Carries The Design

Cabinets that transport Layer 2 traffic over rings and trunks – with routing, segmentation, and multicast handled upstream – run their whole role inside this license tier, and the 10G uplinks remove the bandwidth argument for paying more.

2. Upgrade Triggers To Watch

The moment a design asks this node to run OSPF or BGP, terminate VRF-lite segments, route multicast, or encrypt uplinks at MACsec-256, order IE3300-NW-A= for the installed base or specify IE-3300-8T2X-A for new sites – the features are license-gated, not hardware-gated.

3. Timing Designs Check The Base

PTP on this 10G base is Default Profile only; when a project standardizes on IEEE C37.238 Power Profile, no license change helps – the GE-uplink IE3300 models are the correct hardware.

4. Powered Endpoints Change The PID

This SKU has no PoE circuitry; a cabinet that must also power bt-class devices moves to IE-3300-8U2X-E at the same license tier rather than pairing this unit with external injectors.

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

External supply pairing

Order a 50W-class DIN supply (PWR-IE50W-AC=) for this 28W non-PoE base plus any module.

The switch ships without a supply; commissioning stalls without one on the same order.

10G optic plan

Select SFP+ optics per run (SR/LR/ER/ZR, BX, twinax) and prefer -I industrial grades in harsh cabinets.

COM/EXT optics derate the operating range, and SFP-10G-ZR-I= derates the switch by 6°C.

Corrosion-test status

Note pending salt-fog and mixed-gas approvals on 10G variants for corrosive-site specifications.

Specs requiring those certificates today may need the GE-uplink bases instead.

License PID on upgrades

Use IE3300-NW-A= when raising an installed unit to Network Advantage.

Ordering a new -A switch instead of the license doubles hardware spend for a feature change.

Module width

Allow 2-3 inches of extra DIN width for the chosen IEM-3300 module.

An unplanned width increase can miss the enclosure cutout.

SD card for SwapDrive

Add SD-IE-16GB= when zero-touch field replacement is planned.

The card is optional and not shipped by default.
