IE-3100-8T4S-E Description
The IE-3100-8T4S-E is a Cisco Catalyst IE3100 Rugged Series industrial switch for DIN-rail cabinets that need several fiber uplinks and no PoE. The switch has eight 10/100/1000 RJ45 ports and four 100/1000 SFP-only uplinks, with 12 Gbps of forwarding bandwidth, dual DC inputs from 12V to 48V nominal and 17.8 W power consumption. Each SFP slot is limited to 825 mW, and the switch has no PoE budget.

Key Features
The four 100/1000 SFP slots have no RJ45 alternative, so every uplink runs on fiber. Each SFP is limited to 825 mW.
The switch forwards 17.856 Mpps over 12 ports, double the forwarding bandwidth of the six-port IE-3100-4T2S-E.
The copper ports carry data only, so endpoints that need switch-supplied power need a different IE3100 model.
Dual screw-terminal inputs accept 9.6V to 60V DC absolute, with 12V to 48V nominal. The higher-voltage feed carries the load and the other takes over if it fails.
For utility, rail or marine sites, Cisco recommends -40 to +85°C industrial-grade SFPs and shielded cabling.
The IE-3100-8T4S-E has the standard data path, so Layer 2 NAT is not available on it.
Application Scenarios
A cabinet along a rail or road corridor connects eight local devices over copper and uses the four SFP slots for fiber links to neighboring cabinets and the control center.
On a factory floor, the switch gives a machine cell separate fiber paths to the plant backbone while PLCs and drives stay on the Gigabit copper ports.
In a substation panel, the switch links protection and monitoring devices over copper and carries their traffic out on industrial-grade SFP fiber.

IE-3100-8T4S-E is the 12-port model with four 100/1000 SFP-only uplinks and no combo ports, while IE-3100-8T2C-E has only two dual-media combo uplinks, so a design that needs two RJ45 uplinks as an alternative to fiber should order IE-3100-8T2C-E. Sites that need only four copper ports and two SFP uplinks on a smaller 6-port, 14 W chassis can use IE-3100-4T2S-E, which forwards 6 Gbps against 12 Gbps. Cabinets that must power endpoints from the switch need IE-3100-8P2C-E, which has a 240 W PoE budget on eight copper ports but only two combo uplinks, so powered access and more than two fiber uplinks cannot be met by one of these four PIDs.
Ordering Checklist
- Power supply: Order a separate DIN-rail supply such as PWR-IE50W-AC= (50W, AC 100-240V) or PWR-IE50W-AC-L=. The ordering table lists no default power supply, so the switch arrives with nothing to power it.
- SD card: Add SD-IE-1GB= or SD-IE-16GB= if configuration backup is wanted. The card is optional and not shipped by default, so a replacement switch cannot reload its configuration from it unless ordered.
- DIN-rail mounting: Add STK-RACK-DINRAIL= if the switch goes into a 19-inch rack instead of a DIN rail. The rack kit is a separate item, and the data sheet does not say whether DIN-rail or rack hardware ships with the switch.
- Uplink optics: Choose 100M or 1G SFPs from the compatibility list for all four SFP-only uplinks (up to 825 mW each), with -40 to +85°C industrial-grade SFPs for utility, rail or marine sites. The four uplinks have no RJ45 alternative, so every uplink needs an optic.
- Subscription: Optionally add Catalyst Center Essentials subscription IE3100-DNA-E-L (up to 12 ports) with a -1Y, -3Y, -5Y, -7Y or -10Y term. IE-3100-8T4S-E is covered by the Network Essentials license with no separate license PID, so this is the only license line that can be added.
