IE-3500-8U3X-E Description
The IE-3500-8U3X-E is a Cisco IE3500 Rugged Series modular industrial Ethernet switch for DIN-rail cabinets that power high-draw field devices and uplink on 10G fiber. The switch has eight Gigabit PoE/PoE+/4PPoE copper ports, three 10G/1G SFP+ uplinks and a 480W PoE budget, on a 12V to 54V DC input and an operating range of -40 to +75°C in a forced-air enclosure. The input must be at least 54VDC for Type 4 power (classes 7 and 8), and the switch has no built-in power supply.

Product Performance
Key Features
The budget is 480W on the base switch and stays 480W with expansion modules, so added modules do not raise it. Across eight ports that averages 60W per port, enough for a full set of PoE+ endpoints.
Each of the eight ports supports PoE, PoE+ and 4PPoE. PoE needs 48VDC at the input, PoE+ needs 54VDC, and Type 4 power for classes 7 and 8 needs a feed of at least 54VDC.
The three SFP+ slots run at 10G or 1G. SFP+ optics are supported on 10G uplink variants only, and non-industrial parts reduce the operating temperature range.
The input is rated 11.5A, and the switch itself draws 49W before any PoE load. The DC feed has to carry the switch, modules and the full PoE output.
IEM-3500-8P=, IEM-3500-16P= and IEM-3500-4MU= can attach to this PoE-capable base. The 4MU module adds four 2.5G ports and does not support HSR, PRP or DLR.
The switch is fanless and rated -40 to +70°C with 40 LFM of airflow, -40 to +60°C in a sealed enclosure and up to +75°C with 200 LFM or more.
Application Scenarios
At a highway interchange, the switch powers pan-tilt-zoom cameras and radar units from its 4PPoE ports and returns their video to the control center on 10G fiber.
In a large plant, the switch powers industrial wireless access points mounted along the production hall and links them to the core over its SFP+ uplinks.
In a rail yard cabinet, the switch supplies PoE to track-side cameras and network devices and ties the yard to the operations center over fiber, within its -40 to +75°C rating.

IE-3500-8U3X-E is the 4PPoE model of the group: its 8 copper ports support PoE, PoE+ and 4PPoE from a 480W budget and its three uplinks are 10G/1G SFP+, while IE-3500-8T3X-E has the same uplinks with no PoE at all. Designs that only need PoE/PoE+ over gigabit SFP uplinks can use IE-3500-8P3S-E, which tops out at 360W. IE-3500-8U3X-E is Network Essentials; IE-3500-8U3X-A is the Network Advantage version, and an installed switch can be upgraded with IE3500-NW-A=. Its 12 to 54 VDC input at 11.5A supports the higher PoE classes, with 54 VDC the minimum for classes 7 and 8.

Ordering Checklist
- Power supply: No supply is included. Order a PoE-capable unit such as PWR-IE480W-PCAC-L= (480W) for the full budget; PWR-IE50W-AC= variants do not support PoE. A smaller supply cuts the PoE budget below the 480W the ports are rated for.
- Expansion module: Add an IEM-3500 module such as IEM-3500-8T=, IEM-3500-8S=, IEM-3500-16T=, IEM-3500-6T2S= or IEM-3500-14T2S=, or none. Modules are separate orderable items, and their power draw is counted against the host.
- SD card: Add SD-IE-16GB= if configuration backup or switch replacement from card is wanted. The card is optional and not fitted by default.
- Software tier: Network Essentials ships as ordered; IE3500-NW-A= (perpetual) upgrades to Network Advantage later, and IE3500-DNA-E or IE3500-DNA-A adds a Catalyst Center subscription. DNA Advantage works only with the Network Advantage license, so the tiers must match.
- Uplink optics: Select GE SFP or 10G SFP+ modules from the supported lists, for example SFP-10G-LR= or SFP-10G-SR=. The 3 uplinks take SFP+ only on this 10GE variant, and non-industrial SFPs force a lower operating temperature.
- Mounting: Choose DIN rail mounting; STK-RACK-DINRAIL= is the 19-inch DIN rail mount kit. The rack mount kit is a separate item.
