C-NIM-1X Description
The C-NIM-1X is a Cisco Catalyst 8000 Gigabit Ethernet WAN module for Catalyst 8300 Series edge routers that terminate 10G Ethernet WAN circuits. The module has one SFP+ port that runs at 1G or 10G as a routed Layer 3 interface, reaches the forwarding engine over a non-oversubscribed 10G backplane link and supports 256-bit WAN MACsec. The module requires Cisco IOS XE 17.3.2, does not install in Catalyst 8200 or 8200L routers, and accepts neither copper RJ-45 SFPs nor 100M or 10M SFP modules.

Application Scenarios
At a regional office where the service provider delivers a 10G Ethernet circuit on fiber, the module’s SFP+ port terminates the circuit as a routed interface on the Catalyst 8300 and can encrypt the link with 256-bit WAN MACsec.
A Catalyst 8300 at the edge of a small server room can connect to the top-of-rack switch over a 10G optic or direct-attach cable. VLAN trunks from that switch end on the router port, and the router routes every packet it receives there.

C-NIM-1X and C-NIM-4X both run SFP+ optics at 1G or 10G over a 10G backplane connection, but C-NIM-1X carries a single routed WAN port with 256-bit MACsec, while C-NIM-4X has four ports with WAN MACsec limited to the last two. A Catalyst 8300 that needs more than one fiber port in a single NIM slot takes the four-port module, which requires Cisco IOS XE 17.11.1 against 17.3.2 and fits only a direct NIM slot. Catalyst 8200 and 8200L routers take neither SFP+ module, so a 1G fiber or copper circuit there runs on C-NIM-2T, which keeps 256-bit MACsec. A 2.5G copper handoff, or an endpoint powered from the router at up to 90W, needs C-NIM-1M, which has no MACsec.
Ordering Checklist
- Catalyst 8300 hosts: C8300-1N1S-4T2X, C8300-1N1S-6T, C8300-2N2S-4T2X and C8300-2N2S-6T take the module in a NIM slot. Catalyst 8200, 8200L and Cisco 4000 Series ISR routers do not support it.
- SM slot through C-SM-NIM-ADPT: Add a C-SM-NIM-ADPT carrier when the module goes in an SM slot or must be removable with the router running. A direct NIM slot allows online insertion only, not online removal.
