C-NIM-4X Description
The C-NIM-4X is a Cisco Catalyst 8000 Series LAN/WAN network interface module for Catalyst 8300 Series edge platforms that need SFP-based LAN or WAN ports. The module has four SFP/SFP+ ports at 1G or 10G, a 10G backplane connection and no PoE, and its last two ports can run as native Layer 3 ports with WAN MACsec. The module installs only in a direct NIM slot of a Catalyst 8300 Series router, not in the C-SM-NIM-ADPT carrier, and each chassis takes one LAN/WAN module.

Application Scenarios
At a branch where the service provider hands off a 10G circuit on SFP+, one of the module’s last two ports runs as a routed Layer 3 interface on the Catalyst 8300 and can encrypt that WAN link with MACsec.
A small branch office can use the four SFP/SFP+ ports as Layer 2 switch ports on the router itself, trunking voice and data VLANs to downstream switches over 1G or 10G links with one fewer device to manage.

C-NIM-4X is the SFP-based module of this group: its four SFP/SFP+ ports run at 1G or 10G, while C-NIM-8T and C-NIM-8M each carry eight RJ-45 copper ports. Sites that connect copper endpoints at 10M, 100M or 1G order C-NIM-8T, and sites that must power access points or other endpoints from the router need C-NIM-8M, the only one of the three with 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt PoE and the only one at 2.5G. C-NIM-4X installs only in Catalyst 8300 Series routers, so a Catalyst 8200 or 8200L host is limited to the two RJ-45 modules. The PoE model also needs a later release, Cisco IOS XE 17.12.2 against 17.11.1 for the other two.

- Catalyst 8300 hosts: C8300-1N1S-6T, C8300-1N1S-4T2X, C8300-2N2S-6T and C8300-2N2S-4T2X, with the module in a direct NIM slot. Catalyst 8200 and 8200L routers and the C-SM-NIM-ADPT carrier do not support it.
