C-NIM-8T Description
The C-NIM-8T is a Cisco Catalyst 8000 Series LAN/WAN network interface module for branch routers that need more copper Ethernet ports. Eight RJ-45 ports run at 10M/100M/1G as Layer 2 switch ports by default, and the module supplies no PoE to attached devices. Only ports 6 and 7 can be converted to Layer 3 WAN ports with MACsec, and the module needs a direct NIM slot on a Catalyst 8200, 8200L or 8300 router running Cisco IOS XE 17.11.1 or later.

Application Scenarios
In a small branch office, the router doubles as the site’s LAN switch: desktops, printers and other wired devices plug into the module’s RJ-45 ports, with voice and data kept on separate VLANs and fewer devices to manage.
Where a carrier delivers a copper Ethernet circuit, port 6 or port 7 is converted to a Layer 3 WAN interface and can encrypt the link to the provider edge with 256-bit WAN MACsec.

C-NIM-8T and C-NIM-8M both carry eight RJ-45 ports, but C-NIM-8T runs them at 10M/100M/1G with no PoE, while the PoE model runs 100M/1G/2.5G and supplies up to 360W of UPOE+ at 90W per port on four ports. Branches that power access points, IP phones or cellular gateways from the router, or that need 2.5G copper links, order C-NIM-8M, provided the router runs Cisco IOS XE 17.12.2 rather than 17.11.1. Sites that need SFP-based fiber ports at 1G or 10G move to C-NIM-4X with four SFP/SFP+ ports, but only on a Catalyst 8300 Series router; Catalyst 8200 and 8200L hosts take the two RJ-45 modules.
Ordering Checklist
- Catalyst 8300 hosts: C8300-1N1S-6T, C8300-1N1S-4T2X, C8300-2N2S-6T and C8300-2N2S-4T2X, with the module in a direct NIM slot. The C-SM-NIM-ADPT carrier does not support it.
- Catalyst 8200 hosts: C8200-1N-4T and C8200L-1N-4T both accept the module in their single NIM slot, and C8200L-1N-4T support applies with a 1G uplink.
