For substation deployments, Cisco’s current platform answer is the Catalyst IE9300 Rugged Series: a 1RU rack-mount switch certified to IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613, with PRP and HSR available on exactly three SKUs, the IE-9320-26S2C, IE-9320-22S2C4X, and IE-9310-16P8S4X. The DIN-rail Catalyst IE3400 and IE3300 carry the same two environmental certifications, so certification alone does not decide the purchase. What separates the platforms is capability: seamless redundancy support, timing inputs, port scale, and form factor.

What IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 Require from a Substation Switch

IEC 61850-3 specifies the environmental and EMC requirements for communications equipment installed in substations; IEEE 1613 does the same for communications networking devices in electric power stations. Certification to both is the entry ticket for substation deployment. Between them they cover the conditions that kill ordinary switches in a switchyard: electromagnetic interference and surge from high-voltage switching events, wide temperature swings in unconditioned enclosures, and the expectation of fanless, no-moving-parts operation over a long service life.

The reason the bar sits this high is the traffic itself. IEC 61850 protection signaling, GOOSE messages between relays and sampled values from merging units, must keep flowing during precisely the moments when electrical disturbance peaks, because those are the moments protection acts. A switch that reboots, drops frames, or degrades under a surge event fails at its one critical job. That is also why substation designs go on to demand seamless redundancy and precise timing, which is where the Cisco platforms start to differ.

When you write the spec, require certification to both standards by name. Marketing terms such as “hardened” or “utility-grade” have no test behind them; the two certifications do.

The working logic behind the table: the IE9300 is the platform the substation network is built around, because it combines rack-mount density, 10G uplinks, and PRP/HSR support on its three qualified SKUs. The IE3400 extends the network into bays and outbuildings where DIN-rail mounting fits and its four-port, single-instance PRP boundary is acceptable. The IE3300 shares the environmental rating but has no seamless-redundancy support at all, which confines it to traffic that tolerates normal ring or spanning-tree convergence.

Which Cisco Switches Support PRP, HSR, and PTP Power Profile?

PRP and HSR run on three IE9300 SKUs and, within tight limits, on the IE3400; the IE3300 supports neither. PTP with the Power Profile spans the IE9300 series, with station-clock input on a single SKU. Check these three requirements before comparing anything else, because each one eliminates hardware.

Which IE9300 Models Support PRP and HSR?

If the protection or process-bus design mandates PRP or HSR, the IE9300 choice collapses to the IE-9320-26S2CIE-9320-22S2C4X, or IE-9310-16P8S4X; the data sheet supports the protocols on no other model in the series. One platform limit applies even on those SKUs: per the IE9300 redundancy configuration guide, a switch runs a single PRP or HSR instance at a time, so the redundancy design is fixed per box. On the IE3400, PRP is limited to ports Gig1/1 through Gig1/4 of the base switch as a single instance, which fits a bay-level RedBox attaching a handful of devices. PRP duplicates every frame across two independent LANs so a path failure loses nothing; HSR applies the same principle around a ring. PTP Power Profile and GPS/IRIG-B Timing Input

Sampled values and synchrophasors depend on sub-microsecond time distribution. The IE9300 supports IEEE 1588 PTP with the Power Profile (2011 and 2017 editions) across the series, with one boundary worth noting: PTP is not supported on the 2.5G ports of the IE-9320-16P8U4X. If the station distributes time from a station clock rather than over PTP, the IE-9320-22S2C4X is the only model with GPS/GNSS and IRIG-B timecode input, so that requirement alone selects the SKU.

Do PRP and HSR Need a Network Advantage License?

No. PRP, HSR, PTP Power Profile, and GOOSE-aware SCADA classification all sit in the IE9300’s Network Essentials feature set per the current data sheet. Network Advantage adds dynamic routing (BGP, EIGRP, IS-IS, HSRP) for designs where the switch is a routed node. A Layer 2 substation network does not need Advantage for its protection features, which is an easy place to trim a quote.

Substation Switch Ordering Checklist

  • Match the power supply to the station battery. The IE9300 takes two field-replaceable PWR-RGD power supplies: the PWR-RGD-LOW-DC-H accepts 18-75V DC for 24V and 48V plants, while the PWR-RGD-AC-DC-H accepts 85-264V AC or 88-300V DC, covering 110V, 125V, and 220V station batteries. Order the DC range you actually have, and order two for redundancy.
  • Confirm the PRP/HSR SKU before the BOM locks. Substituting a cheaper IE9300 model that looks equivalent on ports will silently remove seamless redundancy; only the three SKUs named above support it.
  • Conformal coating is one SKU. If the environment is corrosive or high-humidity, the factory-coated model is the IE-9320-22S2C4X; no other IE9300 model offers it.
  • Wire the alarm contacts. The platform provides alarm I/O intended for the station’s annunciator or RTU; leaving it unwired discards a free layer of monitoring.
  • Choose the license suffix deliberately. The -E (Essentials) and -A (Advantage) suffix is fixed in the SKU you order. Per the feature split above, -E covers most Layer 2 substation designs.

Do substation switches need conformal coating? Only in corrosive or high-humidity atmospheres, such as coastal yards or sites with chemical exposure. On the current IE9300 lineup, factory conformal coating is available on the IE-9320-22S2C4X only, so that requirement alone narrows the choice to one SKU.
