ASR1001-HX Description
ASR1001-HX is a Cisco ASR 1000 Series 1RU Aggregation Services Router for WAN aggregation, internet edge, or service-provider edge routing. It provides 60 Gbps ESP bandwidth, eight built-in 1GE SFP ports, four built-in 10GE SFP+ ports, and four configurable 1GE or 10GE Ethernet ports. Built-in port license options activate additional 1GE and 10GE capacity, optional ASR1001HX-IPSECHW hardware supports crypto acceleration, and power is ordered as dual AC or dual DC with no AC/DC mixing. The router runs from Cisco IOS XE Software Release 16.3.1S and delivers compact high-throughput ASR 1000 routing with integrated 1G and 10G interfaces.

Key Features
ASR1001-HX gives ASR 1000-HX routing capacity in a 1RU chassis, which fits WAN edge and aggregation sites where rack height is a hard constraint.
Cisco lists ASR1001-HX with integrated ESP bandwidth of 60 Gbps, separating it from lower-throughput ASR1001-X deployments.
The port layout combines eight 1GE SFP ports, four 10GE SFP+ ports, and four configurable 1GE/10GE ports, so port activation and media planning matter before the router is staged.
Cisco ordering information lists 2-port 1GE and 2-port 10GE built-in port license options for ASR1000-HX, making license inclusion part of the hardware configuration boundary.
ASR1001HX-IPSECHW is the ASR1001-HX crypto module option with no default crypto throughput, and separate 8G or 8G-to-16G crypto throughput licensing defines the encrypted services plan.
The platform supports redundant power supplies, but Cisco states that AC and DC power supplies must not be mixed in the same chassis.
Application Scenarios
Use ASR1001-HX at a regional WAN edge where a 1RU ASR 1000 router needs 10GE handoffs and higher throughput than ASR1001-X.
Deploy ASR1001-HX for aggregation roles that need ASR 1000 services, fixed SFP/SFP+ ports, and a compact chassis without moving to the 2RU ASR1002-HX.
Use this SKU in secure edge designs when the BOM includes the ASR1001HX-IPSECHW crypto module and the matching crypto throughput license.

- ASR1001-HX vs ASR1001-X is mainly a bandwidth and port-density comparison: ASR1001-HX moves to the 60 Gbps HX class with more built-in SFP and SFP+ capacity, while ASR1001-X stays in the 2.5 to 20 Gbps class.
- The ASR1001-HX vs ASR1002-HX difference is chassis scale: ASR1001-HX keeps the 1RU footprint, while ASR1002-HX moves to 2RU with 100 Gbps ESP bandwidth and EPA/NIM expansion support.
- For which model to choose, use ASR1001-HX when the design needs 1RU ASR 1000-HX capacity; move to ASR1001-X for lower-throughput same-family refreshes or to ASR1002-HX when the port and bandwidth plan requires the larger chassis.
Selection Guide
1. Keep the 1RU HX profile
Select ASR1001-HX when the router must stay in a 1RU ASR 1000-HX form factor while supporting 60 Gbps ESP bandwidth.
2. Use port licenses deliberately
Verify whether the built-in 1GE and 10GE port-license options are part of the configuration, because the physical port layout and active port plan are not the same decision.
3. Plan encrypted edge capacity
Add ASR1001HX-IPSECHW and the required crypto throughput license only when the secure edge design calls for hardware crypto acceleration on this platform.
4. Move up for 100G headroom
Move to ASR1002-HX when the design requires 100 Gbps ESP bandwidth, 2RU chassis capacity, or the EPA/NIM expansion path shown for that model.
