ASR1001-HX Description
The ASR1001-HX is a Cisco ASR 1000 Series 1RU Aggregation Services Router for WAN aggregation and internet edge sites. Its integrated ESP is rated at 60 Gbps, and the chassis has eight 1GE SFP ports, four 10GE SFP+ ports, four more configurable 1GE/10GE ports and 8 GB of default DRAM. The chassis has no SPA, EPA or NIM slot, and embedded crypto up to 16 Gbps depends on the optional ASR1001HX-IPSECHW module.

Product Performance
Key Features
The forwarding engine, route processor and interface logic sit inside the chassis, and the ESP is rated at 60 Gbps. That figure sets the forwarding ceiling for the whole router.
Four ports run as 1GE or 10GE alongside the eight 1GE SFP and four 10GE SFP+ ports. On those dual-rate ports a 1G SFP auto-negotiates, while a 10G SFP+ does not.
Interfaces 0 to 3 on both the 1GE and the 10GE bay are active from the start. Interfaces 4 to 7 come on with a Paired Port License.
IPsec acceleration comes from the ASR1001HX-IPSECHW module, which carries no default throughput. Licensed 8G and 16G tiers set how much encrypted traffic the router carries.
The chassis lists no SPA, EPA or NIM slot, so interfaces are limited to the built-in Ethernet ports. Software redundancy with dual IOS is supported.
The router runs on two AC or two DC power supplies, and the two types cannot be mixed. Four internal fans draw air in through the front of the chassis.
Application Scenarios
At a regional hub, the router terminates branch and carrier circuits on its 1GE SFP ports and hands traffic to the core over 10GE SFP+, forwarding up to 60 Gbps in 1RU.
At an internet edge, the router connects to upstream providers over 10GE SFP+ ports, and the four configurable ports follow either 1G or 10G handoffs as the carrier circuits change.
A site terminating IPsec tunnels from branches adds the ASR1001HX-IPSECHW module, which provides hardware encryption at 8G or 16G depending on the throughput license.

ASR1001-HX and ASR1001-X share a 1RU chassis, but ASR1001-HX forwards 60 Gbps with 8 x 1GE SFP, 4 x 10GE SFP+ and 4 configurable 1GE/10GE ports, while ASR1001-X covers 2.5 to 20 Gbps with 6 x 1GE SFP and 2 x 10GE SFP+. Sites that need a NIM slot should look away from ASR1001-HX: ASR1001-X has one NIM slot, and ASR1002-HX adds EPA and NIM support at 100 Gbps in a 2RU chassis. For encryption, ASR1001-HX needs the ASR1001HX-IPSECHW module plus an FLSA1-1HXIPS8G license for 8G, with FLSA1-1HX8G16G stepping up to 16G; ASR1001-X stops at 8 Gbps of crypto, and ASR1002-HX reaches 25G.
Ordering Checklist
- Technology package: Add SLASR1-IPB, SLASR1-AIS or SLASR1-AES, and any upgrade PID such as SLASR1-IPB-AIS=. ASR 1000 licenses are honor-based rather than enforced by an activation key, so a missing package is not flagged by the router.
- Built-in port licenses: Add FLSA1-HX-2X10GE or FLSA1-HX-2X1GE for the Paired Port License on ports 4 to 7. Only interfaces 0 to 3 on Bay 0 and Bay 1 are enabled by default.
- Crypto module and tier: Add ASR1001HX-IPSECHW with FLSA1-1HXIPS8G, or FLSA1-1HX8G16G to move 8G to 16G. IPsec, DMVPN and Easy VPN need the module plus a tier license, and the module has no default throughput.
- DRAM: Choose M-ASR1001HX-8GB (default) or M-ASR1001HX-16GB (maximum). The router ships with 8 GB, so 16 GB must be ordered by its own PID.
- Power supplies: Order two ASR1KX-AC-750W-R or two ASR1KX-DC-950W-R. AC and DC cannot be mixed, and ASR1002-HX supplies have a different airflow direction.
