NIM-4FXS Description

Cisco NIM-4FXS is a four-port Foreign Exchange Station (FXS) analog voice Network Interface Module for Cisco ISR 4000 Series routers. Each port can operate as a standard FXS station or as a Direct Inward Dial (DID) interface for inbound calls, enabling direct connection of analog phones, fax machines, key systems, and off-premises extensions. With onboard DSP resources, NIM-4FXS delivers up to 128-ms echo cancellation, broad codec interoperability, and T.38 fax/modem support. It supports online insertion and removal (OIR) on ISR 4300/4400 platforms and interoperates with SCCP, H.323, SIP, and MGCP-based Unified Communications deployments.

Key Features

Four FXS Ports with DID Option

Provides four Foreign Exchange Station ports that can also function as Direct Inward Dial (DID), ideal for connecting analog phones, fax machines, key systems, and inbound PSTN lines.

Integrated DSP for Advanced Voice

Onboard DSP removes the need for router PVDMs, enabling time-division multiplexed voice, echo cancellation up to 128 ms, voice activity detection, and comfort noise generation.

Broad Codec Compatibility

Supports G.711, G.729a, G.726, plus G.723 and iSAC, ensuring flexible bandwidth optimization and compatibility across enterprise and branch networks.

Enhanced Telephony Features

Delivers caller-ID generation, battery polarity reversal, Message Waiting Indicator (MWI), cable detection, and configurable long-loop support for robust enterprise voice.

Legacy Device and Fax/Modem Support

Compatible with T.38 fax relay, fax pass-through, and modem pass-through, allowing smooth integration of legacy fax and dial-up devices in critical industries.

Seamless Operations and UC Integration

Supports online insertion and removal (OIR), SNMP/MIB manageability, and interoperability with SCCP, H.323, SIP, and MGCP 1.0 under Cisco IOS XE software.

Applications Scenarios

Branch analog endpoints & DID delivery

Connect lobby/desk phones and fax machines, or terminate inbound DID lines from the PSTN while central call control runs on UC platforms.

Hospitality and retail front/back office

Integrate analog guest-room/front-desk phones, back-office fax, and POS modems; use MWI and caller-ID to streamline operations.

Public sector, healthcare, and utilities

Maintain regulated analog lines for alarms, records systems, or specialized medical/industrial devices during phased migration to IP telephony.

Questions & Answers

  • What does the Cisco NIM-4FXS provide for ISR 4000?

NIM-4FXS adds four analog FXS ports to an ISR 4000 router, connecting analog phones, fax, or paging amplifiers to Cisco Unified Communications without replacing legacy devices.
  • When should I choose NIM-4FXS vs NIM-4FXSP?

Select NIM-4FXS for standard analog endpoints when external power or advanced ringing requirements aren’t needed. Choose 4FXSP where endpoints need robust battery feed or special power characteristics.
  • Is NIM-4FXS compatible with SRST?

Yes. Configure SRST on the ISR so analog users retain dial tone and basic call routing if WAN links to CUCM fail—crucial for retail and remote branches.
  • Can I connect door intercoms or paging?

Yes. Many intercoms and paging controllers use FXS. Validate REN loading and audio levels; use impedance and gain tuning in IOS XE for clear announcements.
  • Does NIM-4FXS support fax?

Yes. It supports fax relay (T.38) and pass-through modes. For reliability, test with your fax models and adjust jitter buffers and ECM settings.
  • How many NIM-4FXS can be installed?

It depends on the ISR model and available NIM slots/power. ISR 4331/4351/4431/4451 support multiple voice NIMs for higher analog port density.
  • What about dial plans and numbering?

Use IOS dial peers or CUCM route patterns. Normalize caller ID, emergency prefixes, and failover rules to ensure consistent behavior across branches.
  • Any QoS considerations?

Prioritize voice VLANs, enable LLQ for RTP, and shape WAN traffic. Even analog endpoints benefit from stable IP transport once calls traverse the WAN.
