NIM-2FXS Description

Cisco NIM-2FXS is a two-port Foreign Exchange Station (FXS) analog voice Network Interface Module for Cisco ISR 4000 Series routers. The universal FXS card can operate as standard FXS or DID (inbound-only) to connect analog phones, fax machines, key systems and off-premises extensions. With onboard DSP, NIM-2FXS delivers echo cancellation up to 128 ms, broad codec support, T.38 fax, modem pass-through, and caller-ID/polarity features. It supports online insertion and removal (OIR) on ISR 4300/4400 platforms and interoperates with SCCP, H.323, SIP and MGCP-based Unified Communications.

Key Features

Dual FXS Analog Ports with DID Capability

Equipped with two Foreign Exchange Station ports that can also operate as Direct Inward Dial (DID) interfaces, allowing seamless connection of analog phones, fax machines, key systems, and inbound-only DID lines from the PSTN.

Integrated DSP for Advanced Voice Processing

Onboard digital signal processor eliminates the need for external PVDMs, enabling time-division multiplexed (TDM) analog voice, echo cancellation up to 128 ms, voice activity detection, comfort noise generation, and consistent call quality in demanding environments.

Comprehensive Codec Support for Bandwidth Efficiency

Supports industry-standard codecs such as G.711, G.729a, G.726, along with G.723 and iSAC, ensuring flexible bandwidth optimization and compatibility with diverse WAN conditions and enterprise telephony deployments.

Enhanced Enterprise Telephony Features

Provides caller-ID generation, battery polarity reversal, Message Waiting Indicator (MWI), cable detection, and long-loop support, enabling integration with legacy telephony devices while ensuring reliable and manageable station operation.

Legacy Device and Fax/Modem Compatibility

Built-in support for T.38 fax relay, fax pass-through, and modem pass-through ensures continued use of analog fax machines and legacy dial-up devices in sectors such as healthcare, government, utilities, and retail.

Simplified Operations and Unified Communications Integration

Supports online insertion and removal (OIR) for minimal downtime, SNMP/MIB-based manageability, and full interoperability with SCCP, H.323, SIP, and MGCP 1.0 protocols under Cisco IOS XE software, ensuring smooth integration into modern Unified Communications environments.

Applications Scenarios

Branch office analog endpoints

Connect analog phones/faxes, or off-premises extensions while migrating to IP telephony, with DID for inbound call delivery.

Hospitality and retail operations

Integrate front-desk phones, back-office fax lines, and analog devices with MWI/caller-ID while central call control runs on UC platforms.

Public sector and healthcare

Maintain compliant analog lines (fax/modem) for records, alarms, and specialty devices alongside SIP/H.323 voice.

Questions & Answers

  • What does the Cisco NIM-2FXS provide?

NIM-2FXS delivers two FXS ports for analog phone, fax, and paging integration on ISR 4000 routers, ideal for micro-branches or specialized analog endpoints.
  • When to use NIM-2FXS vs NIM-2FXSP?

Select 2FXS for standard analog power needs; pick 2FXSP if devices require stronger battery feed/ringing. Both support common voice features on IOS XE.
  • Is fax supported?

Yes. T.38 or pass-through is supported. Test with your fax models and adjust ECM, jitter buffers, and packetization timers for best results.
  • How does NIM-2FXS work with SRST?

Enable SRST for local dial tone during WAN outages. Analog users continue calling through FXO or cellular backup paths if configured.
  • Can I mix with digital or SIP trunks?

Yes. ISR can terminate SIP on CUBE or digital WAN while still serving analog lines, enabling staged migration from legacy to VoIP.
  • Any QoS requirements?

Prioritize voice traffic with LLQ and DSCP markings. Even analog endpoints ultimately traverse IP WAN, so QoS consistency matters.
  • How about security for signaling?

Harden management, restrict access, and use secure CUCM communications. Limit administrative access and enable audit logs.
  • What’s the installation footprint?

It occupies one NIM slot. Ensure your ISR model has available slots and sufficient power for all installed modules.
