NIM-2FXSP Description

Cisco NIM-2FXSP is a two-port Foreign Exchange Station (FXS) analog voice Network Interface Module for Cisco ISR 4000 Series routers. Each port can also operate in DID (inbound-only) mode, enabling direct connection of analog phones, fax machines, and key systems while accepting DID lines from the PSTN. The module integrates its own DSP (no motherboard PVDMs), supports up to 128-ms echo cancellation, broad codec coverage, T.38 fax and modem pass-through, and interoperates with SCCP, H.323, SIP, and MGCP 1.0. As a “P” version, it reflects a manufacturing change with no functional differences from non-P models; it supports OIR on ISR 4300/4400 platforms and is qualified for IOS XE 16.5 and later.

Key Features

Two FXS Ports with DID Support

Delivers two Foreign Exchange Station (FXS) interfaces that can also operate in Direct Inward Dial (DID) mode, making it ideal for connecting analog telephones, fax machines, or key systems, while also enabling inbound-only PSTN call delivery.

Integrated DSP for High-Quality Voice Processing

Built-in digital signal processor eliminates the need for motherboard PVDMs, providing advanced time-division multiplexed (TDM) voice features including echo cancellation up to 128 ms, voice activity detection (VAD), comfort noise generation, and acoustic shock protection.

Comprehensive Codec Portfolio

Supports widely used codecs such as G.711, G.729a, and G.726, while also offering G.723 and iSAC options for flexible bandwidth optimization. This ensures compatibility across different WAN environments and unified communications systems.

Enhanced Telephony Features for Enterprises

Provides caller-ID generation, battery polarity reversal, Message Waiting Indicator (MWI), cable detection, and configurable long-loop support. These features make the module suitable for enterprise-grade deployments requiring reliable analog line signaling.

Legacy Device and Fax/Modem Compatibility

Ensures smooth integration with T.38 fax relay, fax pass-through, and modem pass-through. This allows industries such as healthcare, retail, government, and utilities to continue using fax machines, alarms, and other analog legacy devices alongside IP telephony.

Operational Simplicity and UC Integration

Supports online insertion and removal (OIR) to reduce downtime, is fully manageable via SNMP/MIB and IOS XE CLI, and interworks seamlessly with SCCP, H.323, SIP, and MGCP 1.0, ensuring smooth integration into Cisco Unified Communications environments.

Applications Scenarios

Branch analog endpoints & DID intake

Connect lobby/desk phones and fax machines or terminate inbound DID lines from the PSTN while central call control runs on UC platforms.

Hospitality and retail operations

Deploy guest-room/front-desk analog sets and back-office fax lines with MWI, CID generation, and long-loop support for extended runs.

Public sector, healthcare, and utilities

Maintain compliant analog lines for records, alarms, and specialty devices during phased migration to IP telephony (fax/modem pass-through retained).

Questions & Answers

  • What does Cisco NIM-2FXSP add to an ISR?

NIM-2FXSP provides two FXS with Power ports, offering ringing voltage and battery feed for specialized analog endpoints needing robust power characteristics in compact branches.
  • When use NIM-2FXSP vs NIM-2FXS?

Choose 2FXSP when analog devices require enhanced power features; pick 2FXS for standard phones or fax where typical FXS power is sufficient.
  • Is SRST supported with NIM-2FXSP?

Yes. Configure SRST so analog users keep local dial tone during WAN failures. Pair with FXO or SIP backup for resilient emergency calling paths.
  • Does it support fax and modem tones?

Yes, with T.38 or pass-through modes. Validate with your devices and adjust jitter/voice quality parameters for consistent performance.
  • Can I deploy with CUBE on the same ISR?

Yes. ISR 4000 can host CUBE for SIP trunks while NIM-2FXSP serves analog endpoints, enabling hybrid migrations from legacy to VoIP.
  • Any special cabling requirements?

Use standard RJ-11 to analog devices. Keep cable runs within recommended lengths and check REN to avoid overloading the interface.
  • How many modules per chassis?

Depends on ISR model/slots and power. ISR 4321 has fewer slots than ISR 4431/4451; plan density accordingly.
  • What security or QoS should I configure?

Enable voice VLANs, trust boundaries, and LLQ for RTP. For signaling security, use secure SRST/CUCM connections where applicable.
