PVDM4-64 Description
PVDM4-64 is Cisco's PVDM4 voice DSP module with a 64-channel low-complexity tier for Cisco 4000 Series ISR packet voice resources.
Compared with PVDM4-32, this SKU doubles Cisco's listed low-, medium-, and high-complexity channel counts. Compared with PVDM4-128, it is the lower mid-density PVDM4 choice, while NIM-PVDM-64 uses a Network Interface Module slot instead of the PVDM4 motherboard or T1/E1 module-slot path.
During procurement validation, align the codec mix with the 64, 48, or 32 channel limits and identify the DSP install location. Use the T1/E1 NIM path when TDM voice services are required, and reserve motherboard placement for media services such as conferencing and transcoding.

Application Scenarios
Use PVDM4-64 when a Cisco 4000 Series ISR needs more packet voice DSP capacity than PVDM4-32 but the planned channel count does not require the 128- or 256-channel PVDM4 options.
Specify this SKU for a Cisco Fourth-Generation T1/E1 Voice and WAN NIM design when the DSP must be installed on the NIM and the 64 low-complexity channel tier fits the voice plan.
Select PVDM4-64 for ISR 4000 conferencing or transcoding resources when the BOM calls for PVDM4 motherboard placement instead of a NIM-PVDM module.

- In a PVDM4-64 vs PVDM4-32 comparison, the listed channel density is the key difference: PVDM4-64 provides 64, 48, and 32 channels across Cisco’s low-, medium-, and high-complexity categories.
- For PVDM4-64 vs PVDM4-128, the comparison is the next capacity step inside the same PVDM4 slot family, with PVDM4-128 doubling the listed channel counts.
- The PVDM4-64 vs NIM-PVDM-64 difference is not channel count; the difference is the physical slot path, software listing, platform context, and TDM service boundary.
- Buyers deciding which model to choose should size codec channels first, then confirm whether the router design needs the PVDM4 motherboard or T1/E1 NIM path.
Selection Guide
1. Treat the 64-channel tier as the sizing anchor
Order PVDM4-64 for designs that fit Cisco’s 64 low-complexity, 48 medium-complexity, or 32 high-complexity channel listing. Move to a higher PVDM4 tier if the codec plan exceeds those limits.
2. Check the install target before substitution
Confirm that the design names an ISR 4000 motherboard PVDM4 location or a Cisco Fourth-Generation T1/E1 NIM that accepts PVDM4 hardware. Do not treat it as a generic NIM DSP line.
3. Tie TDM requirements to the T1/E1 NIM
For TDM voice, Cisco places the PVDM4 on the T1/E1 Voice and WAN NIM path. Motherboard placement supports IP media services such as conferencing and transcoding.
4. Use NIM-PVDM-64 only for the NIM-slot family
Change the order line to NIM-PVDM-64 when the platform plan calls for a Network Interface Module slot DSP option, such as Catalyst 8300 or ISR 4461 NIM-slot planning.
Ordering Checklist
|
BOM control point |
Required evidence |
Purchase consequence |
|---|---|---|
|
Channel tier lock |
Confirm PVDM4-64 and the 64, 48, and 32 channel density values rather than a 32-, 128-, or 256-channel PVDM4 option |
Aligns the DSP order with the planned codec load |
|
Physical install target |
Record the ISR 4000 model and whether the design uses a motherboard PVDM4 location or a T1/E1 module slot |
Prevents the part from being assigned to a router position Cisco does not document |
|
ISR 4461 exception |
Treat ISR 4461 as excluded for motherboard PVDM4 placement |
Keeps the BOM from assuming a motherboard slot that Cisco says is not present |
|
TDM voice path |
Use the T1/E1 Voice and WAN NIM route when TDM voice services are part of the design |
Avoids putting a TDM requirement on the motherboard media-service path |
|
Media-service use |
Use motherboard placement for IP media services such as conferencing and transcoding |
Keeps service expectations aligned with Cisco’s installation guidance |
|
Software baseline |
Keep IOS XE 3.10, XE SD-WAN 17.3, and vManage 20.3 visible in support review |
Avoids pairing the module with a software plan outside Cisco’s listing |
|
Voice entitlement |
Plan Unified Communications Technology Package or the current Smart Licensing route outside the DSP hardware line |
Prevents the DSP module from being mistaken for the complete voice feature entitlement |
