NIM-4FXSP Description

Cisco NIM-4FXSP is a four-port Foreign Exchange Station (FXS) analog voice Network Interface Module designed for Cisco ISR 4000 Series routers. Each port can function either as a standard FXS line or as Direct Inward Dial (DID) for inbound-only PSTN calls, enabling versatile deployment in branch and enterprise networks. With integrated DSP resources, the module supports up to 128-ms echo cancellation, a broad set of codecs, and compatibility with fax and modem devices via T.38 relay and pass-through.As a “P” version, the NIM-4FXSP incorporates a new hardware component with no functional differences from non-P models. It supports online insertion and removal (OIR) for reduced downtime, works with IOS XE 16.5 or later, and interworks seamlessly with SCCP, H.323, SIP, and MGCP 1.0 Unified Communications protocols.

Questions & Answers

  • What is the Cisco NIM-4FXSP used for in ISR4000 routers?

NIM-4FXSP is a 4-port FXS with Power module for Cisco ISR 4000, providing analog station interfaces with ringing voltage and battery feed for legacy phones, fax, door phones, or paging systems in branch voice deployments.
  • How does NIM-4FXSP differ from NIM-4FXS?

Both offer four FXS ports, but the NIM-4FXSP supplies additional power features for analog endpoints. Choose 4FXSP when you require ringing/battery functionality and better support for traditional telephony peripherals.
  • Can NIM-4FXSP coexist with FXO modules in one ISR?

Yes. ISR 4300/4400 chassis accept multiple NIMs simultaneously. You can mix NIM-4FXSP with NIM-2FXO or NIM-4FXO to serve both internal analog devices and external PSTN trunks within the same router.
  • Does NIM-4FXSP support MGCP and SIP?

It supports Cisco IOS XE voice features including MGCP, SIP, and SCCP, enabling flexible call control with Unified Communications Manager, CUBE, or SRST for branch survivability during WAN outages.
  • What are common use cases for NIM-4FXSP?

Analog phones in warehouses, elevator lines, overhead paging, and fax machines. It’s ideal during phased migrations from legacy PBX to Cisco UC, preserving existing endpoints while modernizing call control.
  • How does it help during power loss events?

With appropriate ISR power and configuration, NIM-4FXSP can maintain analog line power for critical phones linked to UPS. Combine with SRST to keep emergency calling available even if WAN connectivity fails.
  • Is caller ID and impedance configurable on NIM-4FXSP?

Yes. Regional settings, impedance, caller ID protocols, and ringing cadence can be tuned in IOS XE to match local telco standards and attached devices for reliable signaling and audio quality.
  • What licensing is typically required?

Analog FXS ports themselves don’t need additional licenses, but UC features like CUBE sessions or SRST user counts require appropriate Cisco software licensing on the ISR platform.
