C8500L-8S4X Description
The C8500L-8S4X is a Cisco Catalyst 8500L Edge Platform router for SD-WAN aggregation sites that terminate 1G and 10G fiber circuits. The 1RU router has eight 1G SFP ports and four 1/10GE SFP+ ports, up to 19 Gbps of SD-WAN IPsec at 1400 bytes across 6000 overlay tunnels, and 16 GB of DRAM upgradable to 64 GB. Every data port is an SFP or SFP+ cage, and the router runs only under a Cisco DNA Advantage subscription.

Product Performance
Key Features
The eight ports in Bay 0 take SFP optics and stop at 1G. The four ports in Bay 1 accept either a 1G SFP or a 10G SFP+; a 10G SFP+ link does not auto-negotiate, while a 1G SFP in the same port does.
Encryption alone is not the limiting number once inspection is switched on. With NAT, NGFW, IPS, URL filtering and AMP applied to direct internet traffic, the router carries up to 4 Gbps. A mix of 50% IQDF-encrypted traffic and 50% secured internet traffic reaches 5.9 Gbps, both tested on Cisco IOS XE 17.12.2.
The C8000-HSEC export license ships with the hardware and is bound to the chassis serial number. Without it the router would be held to 1000 secure tunnels and 250 Mbps of one-way encrypted traffic, far below the 19 Gbps IPsec rating.
Packet processing runs on an x86 architecture with flow-based forwarding. Data plane cores can be assigned to I/O or to the service plane by configuration.
On the default 16 GB of DRAM the router holds 4M IPv4 and 4M IPv6 routes, 2M NAT sessions and 2M firewall sessions across 8000 VRFs. Memory can grow to 32 GB or 64 GB, and a 2 TB M.2 NVMe drive adds local storage.
Two supplies run as N+1 in AC, DC or HVAC/HVDC form, and AC and DC units cannot share one chassis. In IOS XE routing mode the software side can also run two IOS XE processes on the same router for control-plane redundancy.
Application Scenarios
At a regional hub, the router terminates the IPsec overlay tunnels from surrounding branch routers and hands the traffic to the data center over its 10G SFP+ ports.
A headquarters internet edge can break traffic out locally and run NAT, NGFW, IPS and URL filtering on the same router that connects the provider circuits.
Where several carrier circuits arrive as 1G fiber hand-offs, the eight SFP ports take them directly while the SFP+ ports link the router to the campus core.

C8500L-8S4X and C8500-12X are both 1RU Catalyst 8500 Series routers, but C8500-12X has twelve 1/10GE SFP+ ports against four and reaches 51 Gbps of SD-WAN IPsec against 19 Gbps. A hub that needs more than four 10G ports or more than 19 Gbps of encrypted traffic belongs on C8500-12X. C8500-12X also carries 8000 overlay tunnels against 6000 and forwards up to 118 Gbps against 39 Gbps. C8300-2N2S-4T2X matches the IPsec rating at 18.8 Gbps with only two 10G SFP+ ports, but it adds 2 SM, 2 NIM and 1 PIM slots, so a site that must add interface modules moves to C8300-2N2S-4T2X.
Ordering Checklist
- Cisco DNA subscription: Attach L-DNA-C8500 with a Cisco DNA Advantage term; Tier 2 (DNA-C-T2-A or DNA-P-T2-A) caps aggregate throughput at 2 Gbps, while Tier 3 (DNA-C-T3-A or DNA-P-T3-A) unlocks the platform maximum.
- Software mode: Keep IOSXE-AUTO-MODE for traditional routing or change it to IOSXE-CTRL-MODE for Catalyst SD-WAN.
- Memory and storage: MEM-C8500L-16GB and M2USB-16G are the defaults; change them to MEM-C8500L-32GB or MEM-C8500L-64GB and to M2USB-32G or SSD-M2NVME-2T on the same order when more scale or storage is planned.
- Power supplies and cords: Two supplies ship with the router; select PWR-CH1-400WAC, PWR-CH1-400WDC or PWR-CC1-400WHV, plus the AC power cables for the destination country. AC and DC supplies cannot be mixed in one chassis.
- Rack kit and RFID: C8500L-RM-19-1R and C-RFID-1R are added by default; change the kit to C8500L-RM-23-1R or C8500L-4PT-KIT for other racks, and use C-RFID-NONE to drop the RFID tag.
