NXOS-AD-XF Description

The NXOS-AD-XF is the Cisco NX-OS Advantage package perpetual tier-based license for Cisco Nexus 9000 Series fixed platform switches, scoped to the XF tier that Cisco defines as 10G, 25G, 40G and 100G fixed platforms. It carries the full Essentials feature set, covering BGP, EIGRP, GRE, IS-IS, MSDP, OSPF, EPBR with ITD and PBR, PIM, SSM, VXLAN BGP EVPN, Microsegmentation, IP Fabric for Media Non-Blocking Multicast, PTP, iCAM, RIP, OFM, NGOAM and VRRP alongside Netflow, sFlow and Analytics telemetry, and adds the Advantage-only features on top: Inter AS Option B, Tenant Routed Multicast, SR-MPLS, Layer 3 EVPN over segment routing SRv6, MPLS Layer 3 VPN, VXLAN EVPN Multi-site with border gateways, Multicast NAT, RTP Flow Monitoring and PTP Flow Monitoring, plus the Intelligent Packet Flow set of Dynamic Load Balancing, per-packet load balancing, path-based WCMP with DLB, policy-based forwarding and static pinning from NX-OS 10.5.3(F) onward. Cisco states that Advantage licenses continue to have priority over the Essentials licenses. As a DCN perpetual license it is not portable between devices, so the entitlement stays with the switch it is assigned to rather than following a hardware refresh, and separate upgrade PIDs exist for estates already holding a lower tier.

  • The Advantage feature set is identical across all three PIDs, so nothing in the entitlement list separates them; the only thing being purchased differently is platform scope, which makes matching the tier to the switch the whole decision rather than one factor among several.
  • Port speed is the dividing line and it is not a range that overlaps. NXOS-AD-GF covers 1G fixed platforms, NXOS-AD-XF covers 10G through 100G fixed platforms, and NXOS-AD-XF2 is narrowed to two named families, the Cisco Nexus 9364C and the 9300-GX, so a 9300-GX switch is outside NXOS-AD-XF even though it runs above 10G.
  • Upgrade coverage is uneven across the tiers and worth reading before assuming a path exists. NXOS-AD-XF has both an Essentials route through NXOS-UPG-ES-AD-XF= and a LAN route through NXOS-UPG-L-AD-XF=, NXOS-AD-XF2 has NXOS-UPG-ES-ADXF2= and NXOS-UPG-L-AD-XF2=, while NXOS-AD-GF is listed only with the LAN route NXOS-UPG-L-AD-GF=.
  • For deciding which SKU to order, read the port speed of the target switch first and check whether it is one of the two families the XF2 tier names, because that single check settles the choice; perpetual term, portability and the Advantage entitlement list are common to all three and cannot break the tie.

Selection Guide

1. Nine Thousand Three Hundred GX Sits Outside This Tier

A switch running above 10G does not automatically fall into the XF tier: Cisco carves the Nexus 9364C and the 9300-GX platforms out into XF2, so those two families take NXOS-AD-XF2 and a NXOS-AD-XF order against them is the wrong entitlement despite the matching speed class.

2. Where Essentials Already Covers The Fabric

A fixed switch running BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, VXLAN BGP EVPN, microsegmentation, PTP and Netflow telemetry sits entirely inside the Essentials package; the Advantage premium only earns its place once the design needs multi-site border gateways, MPLS Layer 3 VPN, SR-MPLS, SRv6, Tenant Routed Multicast or Multicast NAT.

3. Upgrading An Installed Switch Rather Than Rebuying

An estate already licensed at Essentials or LAN on a 10G through 100G fixed platform reaches Advantage through NXOS-UPG-ES-AD-XF= or NXOS-UPG-L-AD-XF= respectively, so a switch already in service does not need a fresh NXOS-AD-XF line item to gain the same entitlement.

4. Perpetual Means Tied To One Chassis

Cisco states DCN perpetual licenses are not portable between devices, so an NXOS-AD-XF entitlement cannot follow a switch replacement or move to a spare; a site planning a hardware refresh inside the amortisation window is buying the license twice unless that is budgeted.

5. Modular Chassis Never Take This PID

The fixed-platform tiers and the modular platform tiers are separate PID families, and a Nexus 9000 modular chassis takes NXOS-AD-M4, NXOS-AD-M8-16, NXOS-AD-DM8, NXOS-AD-CM8 or NXOS-AD-DM4 by slot count and architecture; no fixed-platform tier including XF applies to a modular chassis at any port speed.

Ordering Checklist

Check Item

What to Confirm

Why It Matters

Target switch port speed

Confirm the switch is a 10G, 25G, 40G or 100G fixed platform and is not a Cisco Nexus 9364C or 9300-GX.

Those two families belong to the XF2 tier, so an XF entitlement does not apply to them despite the matching speed class.

Fixed against modular chassis

Confirm the target is a fixed platform rather than a modular chassis.

Modular chassis take the NXOS-AD-M4, NXOS-AD-M8-16, NXOS-AD-DM8, NXOS-AD-CM8 or NXOS-AD-DM4 PIDs instead.

Existing license tier on the switch

Confirm whether the switch already holds Essentials or LAN entitlement.

An installed switch upgrades through NXOS-UPG-ES-AD-XF= or NXOS-UPG-L-AD-XF= rather than a fresh NXOS-AD-XF line item.

Software release floor

Confirm the switch runs Cisco NX-OS Release 7.0(3)I7(3) or later.

The Essentials, Advantage and add-on licenses are only supported from that release on Nexus 9000 Series switches.

Switch mode on Nexus 3000 platforms

Confirm the Cisco Nexus 3132Q, 3172, 3172PQ or 3172TQ is running in N9K mode, readable with the show system switch-mode command.

Those platforms support the NX-OS Advantage license only in N9K mode, so a switch left in its other mode will not accept the entitlement.

Release floor for Intelligent Packet Flow

Confirm the switch runs NX-OS 10.5.3(F) or later and that hardware-profile dlb is enabled when Dynamic Load Balancing is part of the design.

The Intelligent Packet Flow feature set is tied to that release and that feature, so the entitlement alone does not activate it.

Add-on part numbers

Confirm any security or storage add-on line reads ACI-SEC-XF or the current storage add-on rather than NXOS-SEC-XF or NXOS-STRG.

Both of the older add-on PIDs are withdrawn, so a bill of materials carried over from an older design still names parts Cisco no longer accepts.

Device assignment

Confirm which specific switch serial the entitlement is assigned to before submitting the order.

DCN perpetual licenses are not portable between devices, so the assignment cannot be moved later.
